I changed my fluid at approx. 8,000 miles. I used 1 quart of Amsoil and 4.5 oz of GM posi additive. The owner's manual actually recommends changing the rear end fluid @ 3,000 miles if the car is used for competiton/racing. I don't race my car so changing the fluid at 8,000 was more like a peace of mind for me. Plus, it gets rid of excess metal shavings from vehicle break-in. I also wanted to add good quality stuff like Amsoil. The process is as easy as changing engine oil so I figured, why not?

even for a manual?? never done any diff fluid work

Too clarify changing rear diff. on a v6...

Automatic no additive needed
Manual-additive needed

Like rtcat600man said...after the car is jacked up, take out the top bolt first and clean off the plug...make sure you keep the o-ring if it falls off when you take it out.

Next, put a pan under the bottom plug and take out that plug. (BEWARE use gloves!!!! This fluid is nasty smelling and it is difficult to get rid of). Again, clean that plug.

Some people move their jack up and down to get every last drop. I didn't find this necessary so I just put the bottom plug in. It is a little tricky getting the fluid bottle to fit correctly to fill the the top plug. You may have to squeeze the bottle and move it around to get it to go in. Then put the top plug back in.

After you have the plugs in, take if into a parking lot and do some figure 8's to get the fluid moving around the gears.

Changed ours for the first time at 700miles and was amazed how bad the fluid was and magnets were both full of metal, again changed it at 5000miles and 10000miles and fluid looked great used mobil 1 full syn at each change

The differential fluid from the factory is synthetic, and good for many miles, under normal driving, not drag racing or beating on the rear-end with burnouts.

Of course the oil looks like heck, the gears are meshing together and forming a good fit together, kind of like when the Beatles added Ringo. There is no need to change it early (<50-70k miles) unless you feel better about it. You want the gears to wear together, that is the way gears are.

However, people on this forum love to change fluids early, and it is their money and time, so rock on.

2qts of 75w90 is very cheap, definitely wouldn't want all those metal particals floating around in my rear axle for 50-70k

I'd bet that a V-6 auto's open diff's fluid would look far better at 1000 miles on the odometer than a V-6 manual or an SS with a limited slip. Much of what we're seeing on the magnets is clutch material. Mine were pretty cruddy at 1500 miles. Should decrease quite a bit after the first change.

Seeing how ours has no clutches in the rear end and our fluid was very black and burnt at 700miles both magnets packed full, maybe it has to do with what our car has to put up with every other sunday?

Yes only camaro that does not need additive is a V6 auto

you should be changing it by 1500 miles for the 1st time. Everything needs to break in. The fluid will be bad by then. then you can go with the recommended intervals. just change it every 10,000.
