This would work nicely on our Camaros...
unfortunately the government doesn't think so. It's a new kind of driver's side mirror. Pretty cool, check it out.

That is VERY cool... and I would think that the first vehicles that need to have this legalized and standardized for are:
1) Oversived vehicles (big rigs, buses, RVs...) 2) Chevy Camaros I wonder if a person could buy one, aftermarket style, and avoid DOT regs requiring flat mirrors. Hell, it would probably be damn difficult to get busted for it, anyhow, and if it IMPROVES safety, I'd do it in a heartbeat, whether my all- knowing government approves or not! |

I've always just pointed my side mirrors directly at the so-called blind spots. Never understood why most people don't. I don't need to see cars that are far enough back to be seen in the rear view mirror in the side mirrors as well.

If you've ever driven a big truck, mirrors generally aren't an issue especially since a lot of them have wide and narrow angle mirrors in the same stack.
Cars--I've never understood why looking over one's shoulder and also properly adjusting mirrors is so hard. I guess the fix is, if so few people can figure it out, let's sell them a product that fixes it for them in exchange for money |

Pointless invention imo.
Adjust your mirrors properly and you won't have any blind spots. |

Pointless law. Probably dates back to the Model T.
Thanks OP for posting an informative link. |

Cool idea, but looking at the prototypes in the photos makes me think that if these would be on todays cars we would see cars strewn all over the highway. The mirrors definitely offer a much larger field of vision, but the objects in that mirror are not only closer than they appear, they are much closer than they appear.
Funny story, last year I rented a Cadillac Escalade at LAX, as I was driving down some main road I noticed that every once in a while this illumination would appear in the mirrors, so naturally thinking that I pressed something in error (the Escalade has more switches than a 747) I pressed what I thought looked like something to do with the mirrors, it sure did, both mirrors folded in, I was rolling down the highway with no mirrors I nearly panicked, but figured I'd press the same button again and the mirrors folded back out. This was my first introduction to bling spot sensors. |

Blind spots DO exist. They are everywhere that I am not currently looking.
I would use those mirrors. That is a pretty cool mirror. If nothing else I think they'd be a good replacement for the currently available spot mirrors so that the 'fisheye' would be a thing of the past. If nothing else you can always use the oldest blind spot remedy in the world: Take your wife with you.

The key is to have the mirror's adjusted properly to give you the best field of vision to what's important on the road. I've used the same adjustment on all of my car's current and previous and it works just fine. To each their own but you can't fix idiocy with a new type of mirror.
