I say go ZL1. But I've been lusting over that car since it was revealed. Maybe I'm not the right one to ask.

I think the key words in that '69 Camaro advertisement were "Replica" and "SS Spec 350 Engine". Those are your subtle hints that it may have originally been a sixer, or had a different engine in it originally. The price could be low, as others mentioned, due to previous damage, or it could be that it is not a numbers matching car, and quite possibly not even a true SS by VIN number standards. Just something to be aware of.

I might go with a 69 Camaro since they don't really depreciate in value. I want one that's somewhat restored so I don't have to do a full restoration.
Does anyone know if Flemings ultimate garage sells quality 69 camaros? There Prices seem a little high. |

I would keep the SS... When I think of a project, something that doesn't run, or needs some work comes to mind... Not a 20k project that's been "restored" once. If you've got the funds for a nice driver 69 go for it. I myself tend to pick up Chevelles in the $1000-2500 range and spend 5+ years working on them to get them where I want... With the extra savings you would have with the SS payment vs the ZL1 payment (assuming you don't have a giant down payment), you could easily pick up a *cheap* project car and have a nice driver within a couple years if you can do the work yourself. If you've got more time than money like I do anyway :P

My ZL1 will be in today or tomorrow and my 1SS will soon be for sale. But if I was concerned about the ZL1 payments, I would have passed on the ZL1 and hung on to the SS. It's been a great car.

I would choose the ZL1 over the 69 but if you can't afford the payments I would wait. 69 may very well cost you more after adding to it and insurance as well as old parts

Keep your car and buy the 69!!!! The ZL1 is a great car but you have to ask yourself, "will I ever really be able to use everything the ZL1 has to offer on the street?" Most likely the answer is no! My brother had a 69 exactly like that one you are looking at except it was a 4 speed with just over 49,000 miles on it. He bought it for just $650 in the winter of 1981 because a guy needed money for air-fair to Florida. He sold it the following year for $1000 and kicks himself in the A$$ for doing it!!!

ZL1, old cars are great for nostalgia and car shows for looking at and remembering the good old days that werent actually as good as memories tell us, but they suck to drive on any regular basis.
Brand new cars squeaked and rattled in the 60s. They wandered all over the road and required constant steering input. They smelled bad, got bad mileage, the AC (if they had one) didnt cool that good, they need lots of TLC, will nickle and dime you to death (unless you really want to fix er up, then they will just commandeer your bank account). I could go on for days. If that little piece of nostalgia is very important to you, like maybe it's how you want to remember your old man or something, then its a very personal choice. If you want one to drive around on any regular basis.......gross. |

ZL1 for me. I don't have the space to restore a car. If you do, buy whichever will make you happier.

I'm not big on the "trade-up" when one is barely breaking even on their current ride but the excellence of the ZL1 cannot be overstated. Bite the bullet and go BIG!
