L99 Resonator Delete Only

Does anyone have a car with or know of a video clip showing the sound of a car with stock mufflers and just the resonator deleted? From what I've heard, the central resonator on the L99s is the source of these car's wimpy exhaust sound. Since the mufflers are pretty much straight through, I'm thinking they might sound decent by themselves. Summit has a stainless x-pipe for only $140 that looks like a great deal. Wouldn't it be awesome if this is all it takes to get a good exhaust note? (Keep in mind, I don't think loud = good sound. I just want to hear a little more than stock.)

Spend the money & get a high Quality Stainless AXLE BACK system which will eliminate the OEM mufflers! Just make SURE it is a STRAIGHT THROUGH axle back system with NO mufflers or resonators!

You need the CENTER resonator to give the exhaust note the CHAMBERED sound that you are looking for. Stainless Works & Magnaflow are two that come to mind that both sell this type of STRAIGHT THROUGH, AXLE BACK system.

I am building a CENTER EXIT AXLE BACK system for my 2010 SS Camaro, from exhaust sections left over from a Borla system that was on my 2003 ZO6 Corvette & yes, I left the center resonator in & it sounds fantastic with no drone. Attached are a few pics of the unfinished system. I still need to add the 4 in. tips & a couple more hangers.

Just thought I would remind you of another option.

I forgot to mention. The CENTER EXIT, AXLE BACK system that I have on the SS now does in no way, shape , or form sounds WIMPY! It is one of THE BEST sounding exhaust systems I have EVER HEARD on a muscle car for the LEAST AMOUNT OF MONEY, & I have ALLOT of experience to back that up!

But it looks rather unfinished. Wouldn't it be better if you had some sort of CME outlet back there. I dunno...

Your suggestion is the most obvious, but the opposite of the conclusion I came to. A Borla or GMPP axle-back was the first plan I had since most other brands won't fit convertibles. Then I decided on this complete Flowmaster cat back. But then I saw the threads on this forum showing cutaways of the stock mufflers, and decided that those weren't the problem.

I don't know what to do, I just want a tad bit more sound. And I'd love to get rid of the hissing and clinking of the L99 flapper valves. So, maybe I'll find a pristine and uncut LS3 system to try out. I'd really love to get an NPP system, but I'm sure I'll never find one of those. And I'll cross the AFM bridge when I get there.

Let Us know what you decide to do. I am in the same boat. I would like a little more sound than stock but I do not want loud by any means.

Yes get rid of the center silencer and keep the stock mufflers. Get the summit x pipe

The L99 resonator is there to address the ugly sounds caused by AFM. It has no other purpose. If you remove it, with straight or X pipe, I really doubt you will be able to tell any exhaust volume difference. What creates exhaust volume on the L99 is headers.

Are you saying there's a difference between the LS3 and L99 exhaust manifolds? I thought they were the same. Or are you saying that headers on an L99 with stock exhaust would be the sound we're looking for?

I'm definitely not going to put headers on this car right now anyway.

Its not a difference of stock manifolds, the message I am trying to convey is that the way to increase exhaust volume is via headers. The L99 resonator has very little impact. The stock muffles will roar at WOT with headers. The advantage to keeping stock mufflers is they eliminate the drone that aftermarket mufflers/axle back systems have a really hard time dealing with. But if you want to change the tone of your exhaust (and not install headers) then you have to look to aftermarket.

I have this x pipe on my car:

I didn't have the stock resonator cut out and this swapped in by itself.

FWIW with headers, no cats, x pipe and Moroso spiral flow mufflers my car was way too loud for me and had a lot of drone at 2000.

I swapped on a set of Hooker Maxflow mufflers to fix the drone, which they did.

The system looks unfinished because it is unfinished. I have 4 in. Borla slash cut tips that will be added soon. I live in Indiana & am waiting for the weather to warm-up so that I can work in the garage & finish it, & yes once again it sounds fantastic.
