You don't really need the thermostat unless you're doing hot laps, or running high rpm's constantly, right? Otherwise, wouldn't it hurt your engine? Just a ? don't quote me on that.

I'm not sure about the LS motors, but on a tuned port L98 it should richen up the mixture a bit.Dont quote me on this because its been a while.I remember reading insider tips from TPI Specialties, and it said thats how GM got them to pass emissions. It was a leaner mix at 220 than at 160.

It allows your engine to run cooler and produce more power. I think it might hurt emissions and economy slightly. Very common/simple mod. I don't have first hand experience with running one, but I am sure others could elaborate more.

It does affect emissions, but not in a way that it will throw any codes or anything. Engines tend to run a little cleaner around 210*. Running at 160* will not harm the engine in anyway. It will allow it to run cooler, which is always easier on things that move.

The two theories I've always heard that allowed this to make more power were

1) The engine ran cooler, therefore the intake charge was cooler and denser, making more power.
2) The metal doesn't expand quite as much, allowing the engine to run a little "looser" and freeing up power by reducing friction.

Back in my 3rd gen Days ,the first thing to do to the car was a 160 thermostat and bump the fuel pressure to around 43 PSI
