Flowmaster drone, reinstall resonators?
I'm not happy with the drone at lower rpm's with my flowmaster american thunder cat back. Looking at some other threads, it seems my best option is adding resonators. I know it would take some pipe size changes, but could I have the factory resonators reinstalled with this system? I have the LS3 automatic. Thanks in advance.

The is no such thing as as LS3 automatic, if you have an auto you have an L99. And if you have an L99 you are hearing AFM. The only way to get rid of AFM will be a tune, especially with flowmasters.
Resonators and j-pipes will help a bit, but only a small amount, you will still hear what you are hearing. I put a Corsa cat-back on and in 5 miles pulled it off. Corsa along with solo is supposed to be the best at masking AFM and it still sucked. Felix - Sent from my 2SS/RS Last edited by nyrfan; 01-12-2013 at 06:45 PM. |

Sorry, you're right, it's the L99. Not sure what is meant by the tune and AFM?

the l99 cuts down from 8 to 4 cylinders with AFM, that is what you are hearing... the stock mufflers hides that, they have a j-pipe in them, which is why they are so big... the only way to get rid of that terrible noise is to tune out AFM by tuning the ECM... j-pipes will help a little but the best bet is tuning it out... that is what sucks about the l99, you either have to tune, have a really quite exhaust note, or hear the AFM if you go aftermarket...
but once you tune it out, the options are endless and just depends on how mild or wild you want your car to sound

Ok, gotcha, I understand. Short of reinstalling the factory exhaust which would cost too much since I've already spent so much on the Flowmaster, and I don't want to tune out the AFM, is there something I can put on to stop the drone? Suggested J pipes might work, but I don't like what I've seen on those.

Disable AFM..if that does not work, get better mufflers. There are plenty of mufflers that sound great without having to weld on extra resonators and j-pipes.

Although built off the LS3 platform an auto is considered an L99. Unless I am missing something.

AFM can be disabled in M mode. Put shifter in M mode, tap shift down, then up, then down again. AFM is now disabled until you shift out of M. But you have to shift by using the tap shift while driving. The drone is not noticeable then. I have Flowmasters.

What's the matter with adding j's to your Flows as others have done on this forum? You can't see them from behind and they work.
