And Impala outsells them both.

Charger is a bit of an apples to oranges comparison due to the RWD drivetrain but Taurus and Impala is a crapshoot.

Interior quality, interior space, cargo space, drivetrain, driving dynamics.

I'd take the '14 Impala over the '13/'14 Taurus any day of the week. And I have driven both recently

IMHO,. the Impala's biggest competitors are the Taurus, Avalon, and GMs own Lacrosse. I do see the Charger and 300 as competitors, but I somehow doubt that most people shopping them will seriously cross shop the Impala for the reasons mentioned by fenwick.

The Impala is an awesome car, but has a few defincies compared to competiors, though they are minor and I think the Impala will still outsell them.

vs Taurus:

The advantages to the Taurus are that the V6 is standard, for roughly the same entry price, the 4 banger is optional on it, but it has a snail attatched that is at least capable of moving these big boats, fuel milaeage is still very similar. The taurus also has available AWD and an available high end performance model, the SHO.

Why I believe the Impala will still outsell the Taurus: The Impala is arguably better looking, the interior is nicer, and most important in a big car, the Taurus is tight for a fullsizer while the Impala should have tons of room. The Tauruse's advantages are minor blips on the sales charts at best.

Avalon advantages: The new Avalon is actually a good looking car, not so much as the Impala, but not bad. The V6 is standard and gets similar fuel mileage to the 4 cylinder Impala, but will be considerably quicker than the V6, possibly by much as a second 0-60. The hybrid version is WORLDS ahead of what the Impala will offer in power, acceleration, and fuel mileage.

Similarities: The Avalon does not suffer the Taurus's lack of room inside, like the Impala the Avalon is only offered in FWD, it has an excellent interior that most even prefer to it's platform mate, the Lexus ES350.

Why The Impala will still outsell it: It is EXPENSIVE. Starting price alone is over 31k, though the both top out around 40k+. Impala is just a better known and accepted nameplate.

Lacrosse: Well, the only advantage here is that is offers AWD, which is nice, but honestly does not really affect these cars abilitty to sell. The Impala will just naturally be the volume leader in the GM camp style and it provides a fresh face to the Lacrosses honestly staid styling.

On the Impala I am guess the volume seller to the public will be a midlevel LT with the V6. The volume to rental agencies will probably be a base 4 cyclinder. THe one big unknown is whether the new one can really maintain the Volume of the 13 model Impala. One reason it sold so well was that it offered the standard V6 and fullsize room for, really, 4 cylinder Malibu pricing. Remember the thing has been running as much as 4000 in rebates off the top, with dealers willing to move even further, for years now. Not that the car isn't worth the increase in price, with the MUCH higher quality, better styling, better effiiency, and tons of additional features it is finally worthy of primetime. I just hope the public isn't expecting the new considerably better car for the bargain basement pricing of the old one.

I think you're confusing Taurus and Fusion.
