Back in November of 2008 I actually got more out of Carmax then any local Chevrolet dealer and private buyers wanted to come down way too much. Carmax gave me $500 under KBB "private sale" estimates. It's a really streamlined process as well. No BS, they appraise your car and give you a number, you sell it or you don't. I'd go talk to them even if you know you're not going to sell it to them, because when they appraise it they give a print out on what they like and don't like. You could even use that to show a private buyer as an outside opinion of what condition your car is in.

Thanks, if I order from out of town & get the car shipped in I need a back up plan if I can't sell the car.

CarMax offered $1000 more than the Chevy dealer. Several years ago they offered me $2000 more than a Honda dealer.

Selling yourself on Autotrader works best and you can make $1000 to $2000 more depending on the car and the condition. They give you about a week to decide to accept their deal or not.

I got good money from CarMax - that's where my last ride went, instead of trading it in at the dealership for my Camaro. One word: painless. I've also bought a couple of cars from them in times past.

In just about every case you can get more money selling cars privately than from a corporation. Just gotta know how to set a price and haggle it out.

I'd never to business with them. I took my 2000 Camaro SS there about 3 years ago. They appraised it and offered a $1000 less than what I just sold it for in July 2009.

Sorry, but in my opinion, carmax = rip off!

Just selling it to them. Never bought anything there but the way they check cars out, I wouldn't hesitate to buy there either.

I forgot the exact numbers but I had a pristine 2006 Pontiac Solistice with extremely low mileage for the year that it was. In fall of 2008 I went to Car max and they were trying to buy it for a couple of thousand less than the worse blue book value. I then went over to Enterprise as in enterprise car rentals, who also buy vehicles. They offered me top blue book value which was several thousand more than car max.

So I sold the car to Enterprise. I dont recall the exact numbers right now but I think the difference was something like $3-4k between Carmax and Enteprise.

You could get a little more selling privately but to me, it's not worth the hassle. All the people calling, coming over to your house, test driving it, trying to haggle you down. Carmax, fast and easy..just like my Women!!!

I guess it depends where you are at and what the market is doing there. In the past I have had dealers to offer to drive me to CarMax, which was right down the road and bring me back after selling my car, BUT, I went in a head of time to do some investigation, brought my truck in and had them assess it, and they offered my HALF of what I was offered as a trade by my dealer, and that was only 2k below bluebook. In my neck of the woods, stay away from them.

Same thing here they were unbelievably low on a truck I took to them, ended up getting more than $2k more from the dealer.

They should rename their lots to "CAR MIN".
