Peeling Steering Wheel

Noticed this afternoon that the flat black paint on the little plastic piece at the bottom of my SS's steering wheel is peeling in spots. Car's about 18 months old. Anyone seen this? Can't decide if it's worth fixing. Love the steering wheel otherwise. Where the flat black came off, it's shiny underneath. You can see in the photo a few other little bubbles that are about to peel.

My cars doing the same thing. Cars had lots of problems. Motor failure at 18,500 miles due to afm lifter. A8 has been flushed per Gm tsb. Still shifting hard and erratically and shutters hard. Cars going back into the dealer next week for transmission lol. I’m going to a lemon law lawyer after this visit. I’m sure I have a strong case.

Not just chevy, my MINI had the same issue with the satin black coating on the steering wheel trim. Personally, I believe its a chemical reaction between some cleaning product and the surface. Once compromised, the surface bubbles and peels, like plasti-dip. What I would do in your situation is:

1.) Remove the trim.

2.) remove the SS badge, or tape it off.

3.) Sand finish through varying grades of sandpaper.

4.) Finish the surface off with 1000 grit sandpaper, leaving a satin finish in the actual plastic, something that would never peel off.

The dealer should fix the issue under the warranty, but you may end up leaving with a cracked windshield due to common dealership negligence.

I've never actually used a chemical to clean the wheel--just wiped it with a cloth. As for removing the piece, any idea how to get it off? I'd hate to start prying on it and bust it. And I agree about the dealer--the cure may be worse than the disease.

Thanks. You have an entire wheel, or just this trim piece?

Mine did that too. I took it off, peeled the rest and painted body color.

Mine did it too. I think that little square piece of plastic pops off and can be replaced without needing a whole new wheel, but I haven't tried.

You can order the part for about 30 bucks. Id just pop that off with a plastic ply and pop a new one on. simple. Go to dealer and show them which part you want to order.
