How to see if oil is in intake manifold?
Is there a way? I have been reading all these threads about oil in the intake manifold on the 6 and the 8. The pictures are hard to look at! I'm just wondering if I need a catch can or not. I would like to be able to take a look in my V6 first before I drop 150 bucks to fix a problem I'm not sure if I have. If I do have the oil problem then I'm sure at 29K, its probably substantial build up by now. Thanks for any info and tips!

take off the throttle body. it's pretty easy to do.
edit: and better late then never. also, you can flush all the existing gunk out.

the aluminum housing is the intake manifold. the intake tube connects to the throttle body.
Not sure how seafoam works on these cars, but that's how some people do it. put some in the gas tank. it's patroleum based. but don't do it on my account. lol i'm just giving you information.

Oil change and catch can
I am an old guy who got tired of doing his own oil changes a couple of years ago so I am not familiar with an oil change on my 2011 SS as the dealers has done it. With synthetic it alreaady costs enough. Does a catch can get in the way of an oil change, giving the dealer an opportunity to charge me even more?

The thing that is connected to is your throttle body valve. Behind that valve is your intake. Push the valve open and look inside. If you can't see in, grab a clean rag, stuff it in and pull it out. You'll be amazed.

Yes you will and do have oil in there. It gets gunked up becuase the EPA mandated things be done this way by not allowing anything to escape the engine to be more eco friendly. When you take your car in for service and they offer you the $150 throttle body service. It's basically to clean out all the crap that gets in now due to these rules. That TB service won't clean out the valley though and it does wear on the motor by causing detonation, burning of that oil. The catch can prevents most of this from happening.

Make sure you plugged everything back in properly. Could be loose wiring. Double check it and try again. |

FYI, I traded my stock intake and TB for a ported set. I put a catch can on mine with only about 500 miles on it. The intake/TB had 12k or so when taken off. They were absolutely dry inside. The ones I got, had a small amount of oil. I have no idea how many miles were on them but I cleaned them out with brake cleaner.
I'm sold on catch cans. |
