New GM Oil Spec - dexos 1

GM has introduced a new global oil spec called "dexos 1". It is the only oil to be used in all 2011 model year Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles and is also recommended for pre-2011 vehicles except diesels.
Does any one know if this is a synthetic oil only? I believe Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Synthetic meet the spec. I will have to ask my dealer which oil brands comply with the spec since GM can void the warranty on 2011 vehicles if you don't service them with oil that meets the new spec. In addition to our 2010 Camaro we just purchased a 2011 Equinox. Would rather use just one oil spec for both vehicles.

There is already a thread about this. Use the search function. Lots of info in it.

To answer your question, yes, it is synthetic only.

Not true. I have found it in stores already. Walmart for one. Pennzoil Platinum and Quaker State UD both show it on the back of their bottles. Have not seen it on Mobil 1 bottles yet, but the old stock is on sale like crazy, so I assume it won't be long.

I have had a 2011 Camaro for 6 months, and when I asked the dealer about oil changes, they said they would just use Mobil 1.
Can't imagine this spec is REALLY any better than the GM 4718M spec for the Corvette, which most synthetics now meet.
I am going to continue to use Valvoline Synpower in all my cars, including my Z06 and Camaro. If GM does not guarantee the engine, Valvoline will (for 300,000 miles)

2011 Chevrolet Camaro | Camaro VIN F Service Manual | Document ID: 2505109
#PI0175: Information for dexos 1 Synthetic Blend Engine Oil Usage for Topping Off or Change, Current Availability and Allowable Temporary Substitutes - (Jul 19, 2010)

Subject:Information for dexos 1™ Synthetic Blend Engine Oil Usage for Topping Off or Change, Current Availability and Allowable Temporary Substitutes

Models:2011 Passenger Cars and Trucks (Excluding All Vehicles Equipped With Duramax™ Diesel Engines)

Attention: General Motors new engine oil specification dexos 1™ replaces both current General Motors specifications GM6094M and GM4718M.

The following information may be helpful when encountering a vehicle with the condition as described in this PI.
<A href="http://gsi.xw.gm.com/si/showDoc.do?docSyskey=2505109&from=sm#ss1-2505109">Condition/Concern

• Owners of model year 2011 vehicles may be concerned about the availability of engine oil meeting the new dexos 1™ engine oil specification. This PI provides the necessary information as to what the vehicle owner or dealer service department should do if they need to add engine oil or change the engine oil in their new vehicle, until the availability of dexos 1™ engine oil becomes widespread.
For additional information refer to dexos 1™ Synthetic Blend Engine Oil Announcement - Customer Care and Aftersales Bulletin CCA10-129 (U.S.) or GMP2010-149 (Canada).
• GM has introduced the dexos 1™ engine oil specification because it offers several advantages over engine oils of previous specifications. These advantages include all of the following:
- A greater level of engine cleanliness.
- Additional wear protection.
- Improved aeration control.
- Improved corrosion protection.
- Increased fuel economy.
- Increased sludge control.
- dexos 1™ is backwards compatible to older vehicles and is a suitable oil for pre-2011 GM vehicles (excluding all vehicles equipped with Duramax™ diesel engines).

<A href="http://gsi.xw.gm.com/si/showDoc.do?docSyskey=2505109&from=sm#ss2-2505109">Recommendation/Instructions

• As the availability of dexos 1™ increases, GM highly recommends that owners switch to dexos 1™ as soon as is practical to conform with GM Powertrain warranty requirements.
• When dexos 1™ oil becomes available dealers should use their inventory of American Petroleum Institute (API) Certified for Gasoline Engines Starburst oils in vehicles that DO NOT require dexos 1™ oil.
• GM's acceptance of the use of substitute engine oils is temporary. The acceptability of non dexos 1™ engine oils will be discontinued when dexos 1™ oil availability is pervasive. GM recommends the following substitute engine oils as outlined per applicable vehicle:

Vehicles With Naturally - Aspirated Engines (Excluding Camaro SS with RPO LS3, Corvette, and CTS-V)

Note: Advise the customer to refer to their Owner Manual for more information.
To maintain proper engine oil level or to change the engine oil, substitute an engine oil identified on the label with the American Petroleum Institute (API) Certified for Gasoline Engines Starburst symbol as shown, with a viscosity grade of SAE 5W-30.
Camaro SS with RPO LS3, Corvette, and CTS-V

Note: Advise the customer to refer to their Owner Manual for more information.
To maintain proper engine oil level or to change the engine oil, substitute an engine oil meeting the GM Standard of: GM4718M, also identified on the label with the American Petroleum Institute (API) Certified for Gasoline Engines Starburst symbol as shown, with a viscosity grade of SAE 5W-30.
Vehicles With Turbocharged (TC) Engines

Note: Advise the customer to refer to their Owner Manual for more information.
To maintain proper engine oil level or to change the engine oil, substitute an engine oil meeting the GM Standard of: GM4718M, also identified on the label with the American Petroleum Institute (API) Certified for Gasoline Engines Starburst symbol as shown, with a viscosity grade of SAE 5W-30.

  • ExxonMobil will continue as the GM supplier for the U.S. GM dealer network for the next five years. <LI class=bwlistitemmarginbottom>ExxonMobil is now licensed to provide dexosTM trademarked products to GM dealers and consumers worldwide.
  • Mobil 1 licensed for dexosTM specifications.
September 10, 2010 01:38 PM Eastern Time
FAIRFAX, Va.-ExxonMobil signed an agreement to continue as the lubricants supplier for the U.S. General Motors’ dealer network for the next five years. In addition, ExxonMobil announced that a number of its key products, including Mobil 1, are now officially dexosTM licensed worldwide.
“We can count on ExxonMobil to support our dealer network and train them on the use of quality lubricants.”
The new dexosTM licensed ExxonMobil products will meet the GM global engine oil specifications and will be designated by displaying dexos1 or dexos2 logos on the product labels. These engine oils are designed to meet the specific requirements of gasoline and diesel engines used in GM vehicles worldwide.
“We’ve been working with GM for a long time, and we look forward to continued growth with this important alliance,” said Ken MacGibbon, sales director strategic global alliances for ExxonMobil Lubricants & Petroleum Specialties Company. “ExxonMobil has been the supplier for the U.S. GM dealer network since 1990, and during the last 20 years, the GM service fill program has become one of the best original engine manufacturer lubricants programs in the industry. With strong efforts between both companies, we have grown sales, including Mobil 1, every year within the GM dealership network.”
“Our track record with ExxonMobil has been very strong, and we select our lubricant supplier based on their quality, reliability and their ability to help us grow our business,” said Jeff Quigley, general director, GM Customer Care and Aftersales. “We can count on ExxonMobil to support our dealer network and train them on the use of quality lubricants.”
ExxonMobil’s dexosTM licensed products will provide consumers with a strong product offer giving GM drivers more options when it comes to their motor oil. Part of the offer will be Mobil 1, the world’s leading synthetic motor oil brand, with Mobil 1 5W-30 for dexos1 and Mobil 1 ESP 0W-40 for dexos2.
As part of the agreement, ExxonMobil will also market General Motors’ new semi-synthetic engine oil, ACDelco dexos1 5W30, to be launched later this year in the U.S. and Canada.

Pennzoil Platinum® Exceeds New Oil Spec For 2011 GMVehicles
HOUSTON, July 2010—General Motors is introducing dexos1, a new global engine oil specification for gasoline and E85-fueled vehicles, in all 2011 model year Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles. Basically, the company requires that every owner of these vehicles use an oil that is dexos1approved at every oil change. It also encourages owners of pre-2011 GM vehicles (except diesels) to use a dexos1-approved oil as well, as the new specification offers several advantages over previously available motor oils, including improved levels of:
• Engine cleanliness
• Corrosion protection
• Sludge control
• Wear protection
• Aeration control
• Fuel economy
GM says these will result in improved engine life and performance.
Therefore, every owner of the GM vehicles mentioned — new and old — should be pleased to learn that new, next-generation Pennzoil Platinum
® full synthetic motor oil is fully dexos1-approved in the popular SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade.
And they should be even more pleased to learn that new, next-generation Pennzoil Platinum
® actually exceeds dexos1standards, particularly in the area of engine cleansing. Pennzoil Platinum® keeps pistons up to 40% cleaner than the toughest industry standard*. So try new dexos1-approved Pennzoil Platinum® and Feel The Clean.*Based on ILSAC GF-5 and Sequence IIIG piston deposit test using SAE 5W-30.
Not just oil, Pennzoil.®

I didn't read all the replies so I don't know if this was mentioned. The GM Dexos oil is not a full synthetic, it is a synthetic blend. I will just continue using the Pennzoil Platinum in my car.
