My Thoughts on Production Guide Numbers

Everyone here realizes that every dealer got a guide number of Camaros way back in October of 2008. That was then and this is now. Things change and so do forecasts.

Our guide number was 9. This represents the approx. number of Camaro's were are supposed to get thru the end of Q3. This was never a promise or guarantee by GM that this was set in stone. I think these guide numbers were ultra conservative,

As of mid April, our store will have gotten 5 of the 9. I'm no mathematician but it seems to me that if things move along the way they seem to be, we will be getting way more than that number before the end of Q3 (Sept.2009). If not, does that mean that they will only give me another 4 between May and the end of September? Only 1 more per month? I don't think so. Can they change their mind (GM)? Absolutely. What do they say? The only guarantees are death and taxes.

I've been a Chevrolet sales manager since 1988 and I have been using the current ordering system since inception. I can only go by experience and say there will plenty more Camaros available than the guide numbers show.

Just my .02

Thanks. I thought it was conservative but that's a good bit more conservative than I thought.

Well then it's all good right? Under promise and over deliver! The only exception are the options which GM has indicated as being late (hurst shifter for example).

Sounds reasonable to me. I just hope GM doesn't keep being stingy with the small dealers then...cause now you got my hopes up that my dealer will get their 1 allocation sooner

I thought the number was conservative, AS WELL AS the timeframe of through September 2009.

Over promise, under deliver (like the Dodge Challenger) = FAIL
Under promise, OVER deliver = SUCCESS!

It seems a lot of the dealers that had guide numbers greater than 6 or so have gotten a quarter or a half of them pulled already, but the smaller dealers haven't. Our dealer had a guide number of 4, and so far, the #1 guy still has not been told a build date yet.

Boy, Amen to that! It seems unfair that the smaller dealers have not gotten anything so far. I would hope that GM would fill their orders before giving more than the original allocation to the large dealers!

I am with you RPO, my dealer got an allocation of 7 and has 3 pulled through April so far. Although I find it strange the small dealers haven't even received at least one.

Remember how the guide numbers were figured.

It was total retail sales for a certain timeframe in 2008

AND

Mustang sales in your area.

That means if your dealer has a low volume Mustang dealer near them, they got less of a guide number because of that Ford dealer.

No matter what they chose for a factor, my area is small enough it was just let's give them 1 for the fact of them being a Chevy dealer. And that's also why they get the shaft on other GM vehicles everytime something new comes out...cause they're small. IMO, GM cares WAY more about the larger dealers, not that I can blame them, but they can't keep forgeting about the group of smaller dealers as a whole since combined they are doing alot to help GM.

I feel for the rural area dealers but the logic seems valid. More mustangs sold in the area = more mustang buyers, = future camaro buyers.

Thread content: I'm hoping the numbers were very conservative, still waiting to order mine.....

GM has been using a "Turn and Earn" system forever. The more you sell, the more you get. Makes sense.
