A6 has anyone broken one?

How much power? What broke? Can the transmission be low in fluid if it has never been serviced? They say that improper tuning is the number one cause of failure........do you concur? Mine caused problems at 630rwhp 615rwtq.........but it was found to be 2 quarts low in fluid.......any and all comments welcomed

I think most burn up the clutches.
Make sure your at least 1 qt overfull if your beating on it.

These units can take a beating but a bad tune can do a ton of damage to them.

it seems like most of these trannys are 1-2 qts low in fluid for drag strip use. For road course use, you must start closer to the factory fill level which is slightly on the low side. I tried running at the road course with slightly higher than average fluid level and it was a mistake. The car started purging fluid out of the top vent after 1 hard lap at VIR. Normal street cruising or drag strip use produced no fluid purging. It required me to remove at least a quart to get it to stop purging fluid.

Concur

All comments understood. The transmission is at one of the best transmission builders in the country right now. Could they make it perform like the PDK in a gt3 or a porche 911 turbo s or a gtr.......lol........ I hope so.

Mine went at 50,000 miles. 750 whp and 700+ passes in the 1/4. Clutches were smoked. I went with another stock unit as I felt my old trans did very well holding up to all the abuse I put it through.

i'm not there by a long shot. 630rwhp w/out the 100 shot and about 5 1/8 mile passes on stock rubber. other words the tranny should not be broken. icing on the cake is......i'm easy on the car to boot........hummmmm?

Check the fluid! before I got mine checked I think I had already damaged the cutches. So I did what alot of car guys do, upgraded! Put in a 4l80e, drives great and holds my 850rwhp like a champ.

This is an extrememly durable trans when properly serviced and filled to proper level.

Low on fluid causes slippage which permanently damages the clutches and reduces the amount of torque the clutches can handle.

Failure will not be immediate but severely shortens the life of that clutch pack or Packs, and eventual failure.

It is necessary to fill this transmission 1 qt overfull for any sort of drag racing.

Ted.

Absolutely!!! Good tuners seem to know this. I wasn't so lucky my first go around. It took almost grenading my tranny at the strip and a lucky encounter with Matt@FSP that happened to be there.

Final verdict is in

The cause of failure was low transmission fluid. Two quarts low to be exact. Transmission tune done by Redline Motorsports was fine. I just wish they'd realized that the little annoying conditions that i complained about was indeed real and not some adaptive learn condition that would sort itself out. Bottom line is from this point on ATF transmissions of south Florida are the only shop that will ever touch this transmission again. Lesson to all........ Have your transmission fluid level checked even if it hasn't been worked on from the factory because it could be low in fluid and you can't count on other shops to check little things for you.

That's 60 miles at full throttle shifting gears. Pretty good.
