The base Vette with 430 HP or 436 (with dual mode exhaust) weighs approx 3200 lbs. The ZL1 at est 560 HP will most likely be around 4000 lbs. The power to weight ratio is pretty close. The ZL1 may be a tad quicker... however....the Z06 with 505 HP with weight similar to the base Vette will trounce a ZL1!

You are absolutely correct....Who would buy their 80k Z06 if their 50k ZL1 out performed it? I think the ZL1 Camaro will be slightly quicker than the base Vette but now we are talking pretty close to the same $!

You also have to consider that it's pretty easy to get a new Vette for $7000-$10000 off of MSRP. Price comparisons for a ZL1 and any Vette need to take that into consideration.
The comparison test between the 2011 GT500 and the Grand Sport mentioned a $13,000 difference in the "as tested" prices, when in reality, it was probably $2,000-$4,000. Huge discounts for the Vette, not so much for the GT500, and certainly not for the upcoming ZL1. |

Actually, a loaded Grand Sport may be less than a loaded ZL1.

I agree....almost. I think the Z06 and ZL1 are going to be really close... I made a small fix in rating

Here is my take on the two.
The ZL1 is for the muscle heads - branging about horsepower, straightline performance, low exhaust noise and just plain out and out speed. They may challenge you at a stoplight or try to race you on a three lane highway. It may or may not be a daily driver and may spend time at the track. This is the ultimate car for those who are muscle car freaks! The Corvette is for the person who whats a roadster! This person what to look cool in the sport car for the most part. The ZO6 is the track version but it probably spends most of the time in the garage or driven on the weekends with no rain or bad road conditions. Some might run it on the track but at $80K plus; you have to run it cautiously. If a Corvette is used as a daily drive it probably the standard model. The ZR1 is for the rich person who just like to have another supercar for his/her collection or is the first supercar purchase. It's main competitor is the 911 Porsche GT and the Audi R8 and Nissan GT-R! That the view I take on the appeal of each car and the image each car has for me. I am sure their is a crossover where the ZL1 could be the cool car for that person and the Corvette could be the person's muscle car. I was checking insurance rates last year and Corvettes in general; have much lower rates then say a Camaro. The insurance company saids Corvette owners are very good drivers; do not get in accidents and are older drivers that obey the traffic laws. That can not be said of owners of Camaros, Chellengers and Mustangs however with increase horsepower brings on increase premiums. |

Because a muscle car and a sports car are totally in the same class.

Plus I think GM would rather have you cross shopping the ZL1 and Corvette, then the GT500, GTR, Caymen or Boxter. |

I think your way off with that analogy. The weight difference alone is whats going to have the Zo6 out ahead not to mention how balanced and well geared and aerodynamic the zo6 is.

I also track it,and have yet to hesitate entering a corner due to how much the car cost me. I've always lived by the adage "don't race anything you can't afford to write off". As far as the ZL1 is concerned, nothing would make me prouder than to have it on par performance wise with the Z06. But in my heart of hearts I think the weight penalty will preclude this. |
