1st Screw up... Need help....Dr. Colorchip repair
So the other day I was washing my car and before I had started I had lifted the windshield wipers in the 'up' position to clean the windshield and hood. After done washing and rinsing I was ready to dry, I popped the hood to make sure there were no water puddles, spotts in the engine bay and forgetting the wippers were still up, I scratched the hood.
How Do I Fix?? I read on this forum that "Dr. Color Chip" is a well accepted repair and theres the "Langka" repair kit, dunno much about it, but I want a 100% repair (without repainting the hood) is there a system out there that would fix this? Its not a huge scratch, maybe 1/4" long. Also if I decide to take it to a professional body/repair shop, will they do any better repair than the repair kit's they sell on the market? I dont want to pay someone if in the end they will use one of these $50 kits . Last edited by Al C.; 07-05-2012 at 08:12 PM. |

Given the spot it's in, and the minor size and severity, I think you will do fine with Dr. Colorchip. It probably won't be 100%, maybe 95%, but nobody but you will ever notice and you'll save probably $300.

How deep is that? Is it thru the color/ base coat?
If not, you could try a clear touch up pen from an auto parts store. |

May sound crazy but this is how I handle these type of edge scratches. I would get a bottle of touch-up paint from dealer. Taking a paper match from a standard match book apply small amount of paint to the bottom tip of match (torn from book). Apply to the scratch. Paper matches make great touch up brushes for small nicks and edge scratches. Apply lightly. Do it two or three times ( a day apart) and you'll never know the difference.

I did this exact same thing to my 2010 coupe, used touch up paint that I got from the dealer to fix it.

I did that to my car a couple months ago and I just used the touch up paint on it. If you know what you are looking for it is noticeable but if you aren't then it works good.

Thanks everyone. Glad to know I'm not the only one who has done this. Car only has 800 miles and I think that's why I'm still upset about it. I'll try "Dr Color Chip" fingers crossed.

I did the same thing myself, and couldn't believe it. Consider yourself lucky, as I had scratches on both sides of the hood and they were consideraby longer than the one in your picture. As others have said a touch up pen will get it back to where its only noticeable if you know where to look.

Being on the edge like that, I don't think the Dr. colorchip or Langka systems will do you any good. They both use a chemical to basically "level" the touch up paint so that it is less noticeable. On that edge, you won't have that problem.
I think you can make it 90% with just a GM touch up paint. Use the brush, or a paper match, and apply the thinnest coat you can a couple of times. The chip repair systems are great for other areas, but I don't think you'll need either one on this. |

Would a paint shop do a better repair, like 100% fix?
