Shift light

I am currently doing a major engine mod on my 14 ZLI, and while my car is down I wanted to know if there is a shift light built into the system or, do I need to add an external one?

Not sure if this helps but The automatic has a shift indicator built into the HUD in one of the settings. It only works when using the manual mode with the paddle shifters and when you are really getting on it and riding the gears out.

My 2015 M6 ZL1 has it in the HUD when displaying the speed and g-meter. It appears as green arrows facing inward from left and right and as you rev up it gets closer to the middle from both sides and will turn red when it's time to shift. I don't see a need for a secondary light.

The 15 HUD displays different colors? Mine only displays one color. That's pretty neat.

Concur - the ZL1 HUD rules. I can't understand for the life of me why they didn't do something similar for the SS cars.

Correct, the display is in color. I am not sure if that is a 14-15 only feature though.

Color HUD is 14-15. They sell them at gen5diy, I've been tempted to put one in my 13

So, how do I "turn on" the shift light? Or is it on only in sport mode? And who sets the shift points?
Mine is the T56 top loader transmission. I did not see ny arrows in my hud. Mine is a 2014.

Not sure if it is mode specific, I always drive in PTM4. To my knowledge it shows up when the rpms get above like 4k and you can't change the shift point.

When I had my manual Z, it would only work if you were working the car. If you eased up though the gears like normal highway on ramp merging, zip.

No lift shift up the ramp, you get shift lights.

Yes, HUD shift lights will come on when:

1 - Driving such that you need a shift light (think it appears over a certain RPM)
and
2 - In HUD "Format 4" the one with the G-Meter as OneBatvATE noted

In the auto trans it is basically there to tell you when you're about to redline. If you don't shift before both sides meet the governor kicks on and it stops the car from going any faster until you shift up.
