I am certainly no detailer but have detailed more cars, trucks, ambulances, fire engines etc etc etc than I can count over the last 30+ years. What I have learned is: attention to details, make sure the paint is thoroughly clean, wipe horizontal surfaces first (where water settles), clean glass before water drys (spots), clay is your friend, Zymol works great for a glass like finish, the sooner you get a good base wax on the vehicle the better. A trick I use to use on the ambulance and fire engine was to mix up a gallon of hot water and pour in about 1-2 ozs. of liquid green Turtle wax in the water. Mix it up. As I washed the vehicles with a fine (clean) towel, the wax would be spread evenly over the the vehicle and dry as a light haze. As I dried off the car it would be silky smooth. I never had a problem doing this and the vehicles looked awesome EVERYDAY!

Thanks. I just got my Camaro in January and you probably saved my finish. I thought I knew how to wash and wax. But, I just got an education. Thanks again.

This thread is full of great information and as my camaro has been in my posession for roughly a month now, I suppose its time to look into its first exterior detail job. While I know everyone on here will vehemently suggest the DIY route for wash/wax, unfortunately I live in an apartment complex that has neither exterior faucets to connect hoses to, or covered parking areas to keep the car out of the sun.
I would like to know, and please keep the flaming to a minimum as I already know this is a dumb question, if anyone might be able to recommend a place in or near san antonio, tx that does good auto detailing work? Thanks. |

FANTASTIC thread, my friend! Does this change at all if you have vinyl stripes that are factory applied? I'm very worried about damaging the stripes...I just got this car and I need all the help I can get...I figured I should ask before I do anything (potentially) stupid!

No change. Treat them like the painted portions and you'll be fine. Though I don't think you're supposed to wax them (at least I don't).

I do the following:
step 1 - clay bar step 2 - Plum Crazy hand Glaze (removes swirls) step 3 - 3M Flash Wax step 4 - Spray detailer i do this 2x a year on my cars. takes about 3 hours per car but they are good for several months after

Second post... Plum crazy hand glaze does NOT remove swirls... it has fillers, they'll be back

Great Thread on detailing. I have one question. How does one go about cleaning the engine compartment?

I just got a 2010 Camaro in January and took it right away to get detailed. Now that I have been reading all these forums on fixing swirls I am wanting to do it myself.
Question: Since it was recently waxed, do I need to strip the car or can I just start with clay and do the whole process right away? thanks |

There were a lot of accolades in this thread about the video on this page and I've gotta say there's no way I'd follow that guys detailing advice. From the sponge wrapped with a net to scrape the bugs off to the shammy, he is destroying his finish. I'd like to see his paint up close and see how many Swrils are in that finish.
It was really hard to watch.
