What a 45mph Rear Ender Looks Like on 2LT

Night time, stopped at red light. 19-20 year old something <chick> <- delete... I mean young lady plowed into me at ~45mph. 2011 2LT. No air bag deployment. Been in body shop for 2 months. Up to $14K thus far. God I hope it drives well in the end.

Photos taken in wrecker yard the next day after tow.

I'll take those bezels off your hands. Doesn't look like you need them. Sorry about the car!

Sorry to see this. Glad you are OK. Are you sure about the 45mph. If so these cars really are tanks.

Thanks. I'm actually impressed how well the car took the hit... there was no braking involved on her part. Probably texting and didn't even see me.

Speed limit on street was 50mph... urban. Police estimated 40-45mph based on her car damage and mine and lack of skid marks. Her front end was totally demolished. There were 5 lanes at intersection, 2 left turns and 3 straight lanes. I was only car at intersection... and she had to pick me. It was 1:30am in morning so I'm sure alcohol & texting was involved but I never found out.

Remember how heavy a Camaro is... what is it... 3900 lbs for V6. That's a lot of car thank God!

Thats a tough car! Unfortunately, It appears to have frame damage. That bumper support looks pushed extremely far back into the unibody frame. Im sure it will go on a frame machine and have to be welded back together. I would fight for totaled or depreciation from insurance company once fixed.

Pisses me off to no end! The worse part is I now see more old white men texting and driving than teenage girls. Face death everyday. I ride to work through burbs into the inner city to downtown Cleveland on a Madone*. Through the city it's the druggies and drug dealer not watching where they're going. The burbs it's the texters. Downtown is a real thrill.

*Assuming because of your screen name and where you live.

Yeppers. I had a '78 Z28 that took a rear ender at the same speed. Folded the trunk right over the back window and sheared my seat clean off. Of course the doors were bent shut too.

Sorry to see that happened to your car I hope they total it and you get a new one. With that kind of damage if they attempt a fix it will never be the same. Also you will take a serious hit on trade in if someone pulls a carfax on it.

Thanks. Allstate stated that damage has to be 80% of value of car to total it. Good point on working with insurance to assess depreciation due to extensive repair.

Interestingly enough, the body shop has a "stretching" machine, with lasers, that pull the car back into original spec alignment when it was built. If you ever watched that NatGeo Ultimate Factories - Camaro DVD, the robot verifies all alignment to a computer. This body shop has access to those alignment points and values.

Note the rear pillar bend... pretty much the whole rear end has been replaced. They stretch a bit but replaced an awful lot. I haven't picked it up yet so don't know the extent. Even the gas tank spewed its contents onto the road. Lucky no sparks were involved. Gas was everywhere.
