Took mine in for brake work and handed the guy (who I know and cut up with) the key. Here's how the conversation went
"You know there's a GM recall on this key right?"
"GM can kiss my arse, don't touch my key"
"No problem. It's optional"

They won't make you do it. It's not mandatory. Just kindly ask them not to.
