I sent an email to Al Oppenheiser this morning via Facebook. I'll keep everyone posted on what response I get!

Thanks to you people finding different ways to get things fixed I don't have a facebook account (and will never go down that road) but aside from that GM needs to fix the problem, I have had rub marks and pinch marks. i also had to have a rod in the top replaced because it came loose and got pinched!!!! Please keep us up to date on your progress.

Thanks for your work!

I messaged him on Sat, no response. I'd imagine tho, being a personal account ,he probably doesn't want a flood of messages, so I'm not expecting anything at this point...

Even if you don't get a response doesn't mean he doesn't read them though.

What Chevy should do is re-engineer this top and replace all of ours. Rails, canvas, everything. It is much easier to replace the top this way then strip the canvas off and replace it. Heck, that is what they did on the 4th Gens when tops needed to be replaced.
4th gens, Bird? So there's a history here? Just curious, what happened back then?

No, on the 4th Gens they replaced the whole top rails and all. It was just a bolt in. I have seen them on Ebay in the past. Original GM part. Mine never had to be replaced but I knew a few people that did due to damage. Installers would much rather put the whole top on then just the canvas. My installer on my Camaro said that is his preference. A whole lot quicker and neater with less problems.
I never heard of any problems with the 4th Gens. I praise the engineer of my 4th Gen Firebird. Never had one problem with the top in 14 years of ownership. Top still looked new after all that time and worked perfect. Granted how it folded the underside by the header was faded after all those years. No frays nothing at all.

No problem. When I started to see the tops being replaced on the 5th gens I assumed they were replacing the whole assembly and how hard could it be. Then all the other problems were getting posted and I realized they were replacing just the canvas. It would be more expensive to do the whole assembly but sure would be easier and cleaner with less problems to pop up. Maybe that is what the fix will be someday.

It's an expression that means Whoa! But if you are from Juarez it only means behind.
