So looking at autocross and needing to own a helmet, looking at Arai.
What advice would you have for someone looking at their first helmet.
Should I spend 800+ or buy inexpensive and move up as I go?
Last what do you use?

Arai makes Nice Helmets. However, Helmets have different shapes as their are different Head shapes - the Best thing to do is find a place that sells helmets so you can try them on to find the best one for your Noggin!

If you are just starting A/Xing, most Clubs have Loaner Helmets. Try that 1st in case you don't like A/X and then haven't spent the $$.

$800 is pricey for a 1st time Helmet when you are just starting. I have been racing for for 30 Years and am on my 5th Helmet. I like Bell Helmets (they fit me well) and my current Helmet is a Carbon Fibre with Custom Paint

Nice helmet I found a Simpson that fit after trying HTC, Bell, Arai (fit but not at $800),pyrotech, and simpson. If you never shopped for a helmet you would never know there are so many different fitment styles.

Make sure you buy one with the SA2015 approval. Most tracks and sanctioning bodies only allow current and one previous rating (SA2010). SA2018 will be the next level in Jan so the SA2010 helmets will become obsolete one the SA2018 takes effect in less than a year. At this point 80% of what you will find out there will be SA2015 but there are still a few places trying to blow out there SA2010 helmets which will be worthless when the SA2018 hits.

my 1st Painted Helmet (my favorite - the Painter painted Coffins for a Living) was a Simpson. Ever since I've worn Bell's. I couldn't even get a Bieffe on my head it was so narrow.

I'd prioritize fit first, price second and weight third when looking at your first helmet.

Some groups also have loaner helmets if you aren't certain about buying one.

If you want the cheapest possible helmet, lot of folks get it on Amazon.

I went with the Simpson Cruiser for road course events. It is SA2015 and open face. I wear glasses and it works for me. Right at $300.

I got a full face Zamp helmet from Summit racing for about $175 a couple years ago and it works well even while wearing glasses.

Do NOT buy $800+. The features you get as you move up the lines include venting options that you don't need on a 60-second run, and lighter-weight construction (carbon-fiber) that really helps fatigue in an endurance race where you might have a 1 to 3 hour long stint, but has little to no value on a 60-second run or even a track day where your stints are 20 to 40 minutes.

What you DO want to do is make sure that the helmet you choose is rated for the club you want to race with. SCCA mandates a minimum of Snell 2010, the helmet I bought earlier this year (Simpson Vader) is Snell SA2015 rated.

800 bucks for a helmet is too much I think.. for open helmets I'd go with G-Force, for closed I think Arai is pretty comfy to use.

G2s: Rock throwing is like like a tramp stamp; although problematic, it's a sign of good things to come.
