Are you kidding me?... GT500!!!???@#$%^&*

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/22/2...leaked-online/

"At the 2010 Ford Mustang debut in Santa Monica, Mark Fields told us that the Blue Oval would reveal "another chapter in the Mustang story" at the Detroit Auto Show next month. If the camouflaged Shelbys running around Motown were anything to go by, the "next chapter" would come in the form of the new GT500. While Ford has yet to officially announce the car or when it will make its debut, a leaked order guide posted on MustangBlog.com confirms that the car will be produced as a 2010 model and reveals new details about the updated Shelby.

In addition to the new-for-2010 sheetmetal, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 benefits from a set of 19-inch wheels (the convertible gets new 18-inchers) and comes equipped with a new aluminum hood with a power dome and a single functional heat extractor. The supercharged 5.4L V8 remains, and although specific power output is not listed, the new model will offer "increased performance." A 3.55 axle ratio is now standard, and the suspension has been tuned by SVT. Inside, an optional Electronics package provides a voice-activated nav system and dual climate control. The leather seats will feature a stripe that color coordinates with the exterior stripes as well as Alcantera accents. New exterior colors will correspond with the standard 2010 Mustang and include Grabber Blue, Kona Blue, Sterling Grey, and more."

Okay - for anyone who's been around a while, my passion regarding getting a Z28 up-and-going has always pushed me toward madness and drives me crazy that is not practical right now (not that I could likely afford one at the moment) and there are many other more important things and things to be thankful that we have right now. However, I posted this as a kind of rationalization, in my mind, that apparently there is still a market for Z28 (in whatever form) and that if there's another GT500, we may still have a chance in a few years (I hope ). Please - no flaming and please comment strickly on the GT500 and Z28. I'll either delete the thread or merge if it's goes toward the Z28 thread we already have

As a past owner of 2 SVT cobra's (98 and 2004) ... The current price of the GT500 is just a little more than I am willing to pay ... If I could find one for MSRP maybe, but it seems these are still going for more that MSRP .. The only thing lacking on this car is an IRS ... I do believe that as long as the GT500 is selling, there is room for a Z28 ... They just need to make sure they don't overprice it ... IMO .. (although out of my pricerange), GM could sell all the Z28's they want if it comes in between 45k and 50k ... They could use the engine from the CTS-V and maybe a special to the Z28 suspesion .. pretty much race and go from the factory ..

Radz I really think GM is going to make a Z28/ZL1, but it will be at least a year to two years down the road. I don't know if your gonna be all that excited to wait that long. This camaro is all new everything, and I don't think GM would be excited in the first place to slap 550-630 HP into a car that might not be able to handle it. So more testing would be in order, and the best testing is testing done by actual people. After a year of sales goes through, and 50,000 camaros are being quote "tested" GM will be able to fix all the bugs, and feel a lot more comfortable about putting that much power in the car.

I did not expect GM to come out with a kill all option right off the bat. When the C6 corvette came out, did the Z06 come out at the same time...No. When the new mustang came out, did the gt500 come out at the same time....No. I would hate to say it because we have been waiting for sooooooo long, but I think your just gonna have to wait. In the mean time, the SS is gonna have to do.

proof, once again, that GM is letting the bean counters run the brand instead of asking the enthusiasts and market what it wants... as long as this practice continues, GM will continue to suffer.

kudos to Ford for stepping up to the plate and delivering to their customers the selection and options that the market is demanding right now.

GT500s sell for MSRP all day long in my area (Middle TN). Looked at a blue and white 09' three weeks ago.

camaro corvette hit the nail on the head. R&D money is drying up.
I'd rather see GM get by and survive with a Camaro, as to go out in a blaze of Z28 glory.

This is one time the bean counters are correct...GM needs every penny it can get its hands on right now.

GM would like to have a limited selling niche car like Z28, but what they NEED is the V6 Camaro to go over big and steal the show, making money in the process.

AND...Just so this thread don't get merged...The GT500 is ugly, and so is her sister.

Let's think about it people, GM makes a z28, then what? You think the GT500's going to run with it? The SS will be able to keep up with the GT500 in a straight line, and that's with less horsepower, 10,000 dollars less(more if you include the "market value" that many Shelbys have) and IRS. And then a turn comes up. Bam, GT500 is in a ditch on fire, and the SS is on his merry way to Del Taco to celebrate.

it won't be in a ditch on fire ; if you want to beat the GT500 off the line then just put a supercharger on the LS3 done deal

I can live with seeing these GT 500/KR's rolling around (for now) In my opinion they are so...incomplete. Ive been waiting for 7 years for a new camaro to be offered, and with the situation that the Auto Industry is facing I can wait a little longer for the "camaro lover's camaro" to show up. If I had the cash to go out and buy one, my short term answer would be, make oy own Z...long term, well we all know what that is, wait for GM.

I'm not of a different opinion than most of what's been posted already. If I can afford it, I'll wait - I don't expect to see this car for so many reason (most are obvious). I'm just a little more enthused because if Ford can demonstrate there is a market, I think it will spur something for this car in the future.

Personally, I don't honestly thing SS will keep up in a straightline race. That car will put down as much (if not more) at the tire than SS is rated at, at the crank, and with both cars in about the same neighborhood, weight-wise, running similar gearing, I just don't see the math. That IRS may sap-out some more power too, as they usually are known to do. I'm happy to give that up for the sake of handling and ride quality though.

For me though, Camaro is so much more about a complete package. Sure, it doesn't have HUGE power, but it has a lot, and the content is great. I'm confident it'll run circles around any solid axle car and well, is just so much better looking. I can't wait to see what SS will do with a good driver on a track. I'm all about making Camaro as good as it can be, and if, and when the time is right, blow the 'Stang away in all regimines of competition. I just hope that this will keep any glimmer of a Z28 in the future, especially if Ford can make it work the the 500.

Mustang = FAILSAFE mode.

That was enough to turn me off on the one that came in on trade in!

No one has mentioned the reason Ford can do this. The 2010 Mustang is just a cosmetic redesign. The chassis, engine, and drivetrain are all carry over. If this was a ground up Mustang, there wouldn't be a GT500.

The 2010 Mustang GT gains 15hp by bolting the CAI and engine calibration from the '08 Bullitt Mustang onto the unchanged 4.6L V8. The 2010 GT500 could easily bump to 540hp and 510 torque by bolting the CAI and engine calibration from the GT500KR to the unchanged 5.4L supercharged V8. The exact components for this change are already available from FRPP.
