When I first boost it (stock internals) I'm going to try the 3.91's with the stock diff..
When I go all out w/cam, heads and manifold and forged internals with the procharger and more boost, then I'm going with the Hammerhead with 4.11's, just for the fact it's a better 1/4 mile gear and still has good street matters, could even get away with a 4.33 on the street with the overdrives these days. I'm talking about long fairly hi speed drives.
But I've seen streeters with lower then 5.14's!
In other words that was probably already mentioned it's always better to go with the lowest gear you want to tolerate on the street opposed to better track times, after all I guess it depends on where you drive the car the most. Then you have the bragging rights of course... Everybody is different. But Everybody wants to go fast!

I have an M6 with Strange 4.11 gears and they pull like a freight train but you better be ready to shift fast or your hitting the limiter in no time flat.

I wont post it here due to rules, but if you want to see a 10 - 120 mph pull with 4.11 gears go to youtube and search for bigggggfoot. You will see how fast the rpms rev in each gear and how quick the shifts are. Redline is between 125-130 in 4th gear with the 4.11 gears in my A6 BUT that is on 22's.

You should see how fast the redline shows up with 4.10s/4.11s combined with a positive-displacement supercharger!

I can imagine. I have 4.11 in my NA car and it comes pretty freaking quick.

Great write up. I'm about to slap 3.91's in my V6 and wanted to know what transmission gear were you using to make your calculations? I crunched some numeros and came up with 70mph at 2162rpm in 6th (0.67:1) with 28.5" wheels. Did I do this right?

Should be 0.67 for auto, 0.75 for manual. I use the calculator on Richmond Gears website.

Mr. Chase,

You alluded to suggesting the 3.73 over the 3.91 for the SS L99. Any reason? It seems the 20% increase would be dramatic but not cause too much loss of mpg...

Am I off base or what?

Which gear is best should really be looked at on a case by case basis so that is a pretty generalized statement. 3.73 has proven to be a very fun gear for most L99 street applications. With the more aggressive gearing in the auto trans the 3.91s start to get into territory where traction can become an issue without some supporting mods.

Okay thanks. Reason I ask is that Chevy Performance is advertising the 3.91 in their catalog exclusively, and I would have to think most applications would be street driving.

That is the only gear they have. It is great in the LS3 and will work in the L99, it just needs some other upgrades along with it.

Which mods do you suggest to compliment 3.91 in A6 SS.?

Already have headers, cold air, exhaust, subframe, and rear trailing arms.

When you say subframe, do you mean bushings or a brace? If you have bushings and trailing arms you are pretty much set. It is probably going to be very easy to break the rear tires loose though so stickier tires may be in the cards afterwards.
