Stripes - painted or vinyl??
I know this topic has been discussed but please go easy on me. I'm in that stage where you keep coming up with mods to do to your camaro before you even have it lol
picture this: Summit white SS with inferno stripes identical to the ones on the Indy pace car replica. I want this done when I get it but there's a big chance it may have the factory stripes already. Could I remove the factory stripes without harming the paint job? So, Painted on or vinyled? Now I did read stuff about doing a clear coat after the painted stripes I believe. Can you shed some light on that please? Is it necessary to have it clearcoated ? and how much should I expect to shell out for either job? |

White with the orange stripes (AKA pacecar) would look cool.
The drawback that most people don't realize about Vinyl is that they will fade, shrink, and check over time. The highest quality vinyl is only guaranteed for 8 years. Vinyl stripes also will be a PITA to wax around as there is an edge. Also, don't get the wax on the vinyl... it will look like crap. Paint is perminant, and will be as shiny as the car. By applying clear on top, the colored stripes can be lightly sanded so there is no edge. Clear coat will cost more, due to extra materials and labor to apply and prep. The Vinyl can be removed without damaging the vehicle. Cost is anywhere from 600 - 2000 (or more) for painted stripes... you want a quality auto body shop to do the work. you get what you pay for... I had my vinyl stripes removed, and my auto body shop painted on an Ice white pearl color for the rally stripes, followed by clear. They should be done painting and clearing the car tonight... |

You definately want to clear your painted on stripes. If not, that edge of the stripe you can feel will, over time, start to flake and peel. Mine are clear coated and you can't feel that line. My .02

Just had mine painted on
Black Granite Metallic rallies over IOM---With the 3 coats of clear, you can not feel any edges. I had vinyl stripes on my 2002 SS and yes they are less expensive but they don't compare to paint--Take it for what its worth, I had both. BTW pictures of the process are in my link

I have no stripes currently but I have had vinyl and painted on previous vehicles. If you can afford painted it's absolutely the way to go without question. Make sure your happy with the color choice before you do it though.

Mine are painted on, and burried in clear. They look awesome.
I saw too many show cars with peeling corners on the stripes at car shows. |

Mine were painted, wet sanded, then cleared over. These cost me $800 (as opposed to the $750 factory vinyl....seemed like a no brainer).

Painted if you can afford it. Just make sure you get a good painter and make sure you are there to approve the final taping prior to paint.

Painted without a doubt. Mine were painted, cleared, than sanded and buffed to match the rest of the factory clear to make everything blend together. Complete trunk lid and hood were cleared.

Awesome! thanks for your input guys. I'll be going with painted for sure.
How much time do I have to remove the factory stripes with no issues? |
