your thoughts on a daily driver ?

hey everyone ! just thought i would ask here since you are a very knowledgeable bunch.
im looking to go forced induction within this year, with that said, i dont want to put more miles on my camaro.
im starting a new job 40 miles round trip every day. its starting me at part time so cash flow wont be great until im promoted to full time. im also going to be attending school part time so mileage will be plentiful

i have a 4-6k budget to buy a good reliable mpg efficient daily car that will last me (with proper car) a god while.

The Panther body cars are practically bulletproof as far as reliability goes. They don't get bad gas mileage either, despite being so large and having a V8.

They're pretty cheap, so you can get a nice one in your price range. Usually well taken car of too by the older folks that own them.

W-body sedan or coupe with the 3.8L V6.

Or a Panther body like Nick said. Everyone will drive safely around you too if you play your cards right.

For 4-6k, you could get a low miles Cavalier with the 2.2 Ecotec. If your budget was anymore, you could get a Cobalt. Also, Grand Am's are pretty nice if you get a GT.

Just for giggles I looked up autotrader and typed in 4 to 6k with any make and less than 100k miles and here is a short list of the 262 cars that got decent gas mileage

2000 camry v6 with 60k on the odo.
2003 grand prix gtp coup 100k odo.
2007 Saturn ion L2 91k odo.
2004 mercury sable 65k odo.
1999 corolla 99k odo.
2005 focus 97k odo.
2003 Taurus 70k odo.
2002 civic sedan 97k odo.
1990 Miata 60k odo.
2003 crown vic interceptor 85k odo.
2004 accent sedan 71k odo.
2000 contour 72k odo.
2000 integra 47k odo.
2007 cobalt 87k odo.
2007 aveo 66k odo.

Well that is a big longer than a short list but all were within the 4-6k price range with less than 100k miles on them so you have a lot of options.

Get the Crown Vic, invest in a front push bar, command the road.

+1 on the Panther cars, loved my PI and ran smooth as silk with nearly 200k miles on it, but watch the transmission, they are the weak point. W cars are pretty good, but all the ones me and my family have had have all developed some sort of transmission issue, so check that and also they are known for front end issues. Definatly go for a 3.8, NA is probably better for reliability, but the Supercharged one in 00 GTP was the only thing that didn't break in some way or another.

May want to check out the 94-96 Caprice or Roadmaster. My RM used to average 26 MPG and the Caprice 24 (it had a towing package lower gear and a mechanical fan cmpared the higher gears/dual electrics in the Roadmaster).

Maybe a Civic or Corolla would work good too, about any year will get you reliability and good MPG. A 4 cylinder Camry or Accord from basically any year would work good too.
