Hess Regular Gas Great MPG

Fellow member posted some weeks ago about Hess gas and howit seems to give better mpg. Well, I passed by a Hess station and filled up. Reset mpg avg, and in sport mode, drove to work 18 mile trip(mostly hwy), and to my shock and joy, avg was 29.2 mpg. On way back home from work, another 18 mile trip, and parked home @28.6avg mpg. Thats pretty amazing for sport mode, and easily a 2mpg increase over other gasolines.

Highest mpg avg ever for me so far, and this was in sport mode. Best I have gotten with Shell or chevron was around 25.6 avg mpg on daily work drives on “d".

Well that sounds real good but you really can't expect that to hold up over a significant distance. See how it does after about 300-400 miles without resetting your MPGs.

I do agree that Hess is about the best gas out there - unfortunately I can't find any around here.

A couple of friends tried the Hess on mustang v6 and 2ls camaro. Filled up with Shell gas, 1gallon each, and drove that till empty on 20 mile mix round trip. Mustang avg was 25.7 mpg, camaro 24.4 mpg.

Next they filled up with Hess reg gas, and both reported over 27avg mpg. They couldnt believe that Hess would b somehow helping make better mpg. They want to test BP and Mobil, next.

Dont know what Hess is putting in their blend, but LFX seem to give better avg mpg with it.

MPGs or otherwise, you are fortunate to have regular access to Hess... it's good stuff and what I would use if available. Last couple of tanks I've used Shell and I can't really tell a difference in performance or MPGs - gonna give it a few more tanks before I write it off.

Hess may be using less ethanol blend ( well less than 10% ) the less ethanol in the fuelk the better the mileage and better performance.

The difference might be what they aren't putting into it. Does Hess have 10% ethanol?

I've tested Shell, and so far it's given me the 2nd best behind Hess.

Rankings:

1. Hess-----28.6 mpg
2. Shell-----26 mpg
3. Mobil, Chevron

Have yet to try BP.

You might be right. I was looking for a 10% ethanol sign when filling up, but did not notice it anywhere on station.

The only 0% Ethanol around here is Citgo, which I buy for my mowers, weed eater, etc. I only do that because of repairs that had to be made as a result of the Ethanol in other gases eating away at internal seals, o-rings, etc.

I don't put it in my car because I don't want to give that butthead Chavez any more of my money than necessary. He never gave me a book... so I don't like him.

@20121LT: Prices vary from state to state, but Hess 87 should be pretty close or same with other brands in price. Our local Hess station has 87 for $3.55 p/gallon.

Good catch. Holy crap $3.95 for regular? Well, if they're also using 10% Eth, then its something else in their blend that works a bit better w/ LFX for some reason.

I'm going to try Hess 93 and see if it gets even better mpg, which technically it should

That Hess was on Long Island, though. In urban areas and locations very near big cities, environmental regs basically require the use of 10% ethanol in everything. Here in Wisconsin, ethanol free gas can be found at least in the premium grade (pure regular is much rarer) all over outside of the Milwaukee, but not within the city and immediate surrounding area because of special regulations specific to the big city. So the Hess on Long Island having 10%E doesn't mean it will have it where the OP lives.

A good way to tell if it has ethanol (even if you are in a state that doesn't require labeling on the pump) is the smell. If the fumes coming out of the tank when you fill up smell nasty....basically like gas, then it is probably pure gas. When there is 10% ethanol in it, those fumes will have a sweet small, almost like sugar.

And yeah, $3.95 a gallon for regular sucks. 10 days ago here in Wisconsin, I filled a car up for $3.33/gallon. Today, it is $3.95 everywhere. Up 62 cents in 10 days, and likely still climbing in the coming days.:(
