Did Camaro (automatic) reviewers use tap shift ?

Something i have been curious about, when all of these road test were being done, was the drivers using the tap shift or just in drive. Without using the tap shift the car is going to try to conserve gas and short shift gears.

For the most part, I think the reviewers left it in sport mode.

The autos have 3 settings: normal, sport, and manual. Normal gives maximum fuel economy and smoother shifts. Sport firms up the shifts a bit and changes the shift timing. Manual is DIY but it seems like GM programed the auto to achieve maximum performance on its own. Manual is for fun more than performance.

only the V8 has a sport mode.

and im pretty sure they were all in normal mode or sport if it was a v8. generally they would mention it if they had turned on the tapshifters

Does the Camaro's A6 behave like the vette's - when in the manual mode the transmission starts off in 2nd gear.

Page 2-29 from the 08 Corvette Owner's Manual:

Manual Paddle Shift
While in the SPORT MODE (S) position, the paddles
located on the steering wheel, can be used to manually
up-shift or down-shift the transmission.
While in the SPORT MODE (S) mode, push the paddle
above the steering wheel spokes to up-shift to the
next gear, or pull on the paddle behind the steering
wheel spokes to down-shift to the next gear.
To use the system, shift from PARK (P) position to
SPORT MODE (S) while stopped and with the engine
running, or from DRIVE (D) with the vehicle moving.
When accelerating your vehicle from a stop in snowy
and icy conditions, you may want to shift to second (2)
or third (3) gear. A higher gear allows you to gain
more traction on slippery surfaces. If the traction control
is active, upshifts are delayed to increase your control
of the vehicle. See Traction Control System (TCS)
on page 4-6.
While the Manual Paddle Shift gear selection system is
active, the transmission will automatically downshift
through the gears as the vehicle slows. The
transmission will select second gear as the vehicle
stops. From a stop, the vehicle will start from and hold
second (2) gear unless the driver manually paddle
shifts into a different gear or selects DRIVE (D). The
driver can select first (1) gear for maximum acceleration
from a stop.

Notice how the driver must manually select 1st gear if he's using the paddle shifters. I know many of my Corvette buddies have been embarrased thinking that they selected Sport Mode for enhanced performance only to forget to shift into 1st gear.

It's a goofy process that most folks aren't used to with an automatic.

You use the same paddle to shift up and down. Remember to shift down from a stop when in sport mode in order to fully enjoy your acceleration.

you put the shifter into "M" on the console, from there you take over shifting with the paddles. unless you try to over-rev the motor, then the trans wont let you shift. and it wont go into 1st on its own, you have to put it into 1st.

you wanna put money on that? there are no real "paddles" only buttons with indicator tabs to show which side does what.

The G8 is the same.

It could be worse, imagine how embarrassing it would be if the car stayed in 5th or 6th and you tried to leave the light quickly...

Slide the shifter from D to M. It won't go into manual until you use one of the "paddles."

Ok guys lets do this again.

The Automatic comes with 4 modes and in any of these modes you can use tapshift if you want by putting the car in M

Normal: Car defaults on startup in this mode.

Mode 2: No Traction Control but Stabiltrack

Sport Mode: Automatic gearing changes a bit, traction control and stabiltrack is losened up for more spirited driving (Recommend for driving on a Track)

Mode 4: Everything Turned off, grab you ass and hang on. You can easily kill yourself in this mode.

Hope that helped.
