I have to agree with the others here that springs shouldn't break like that, regardless of the roads.

I do wonder how my BMR springs will hold up in the future, I noticed they've rubbed the paint off the coils on the dead coils in the back. Rust doesn't seem to hurt coil springs too much though really from what i've seen.

Fixed.

When you add 'coolness' as a necessary criteria, compromises are to be expected. In this case, durability, as I doubt that the OE springs would have broken like that even after all those miles and deteriorated dampers.

I agree, broken springs are a material quality issue, i've never seen this happen to a OEM spring.

Hmm.. Never seen this before. No doubt has to do with corrosion combined with high mileage. PM if you're looking for a replacement set.

I agree that oem springs may not have broken but knowing what these have been through I wouldn't be surprised, The main reason being oem springs do not have the same stresses that lowering springs do. Now if there is a significant amount of people with 90,000 miles on there aftermarket springs, still on the original factory struts and have endured what I would consider somewhat severe use then I would have to agree but I'm not thinking there are.

I've seen it rather recently (on a Mustang forum). IIRC, one of the broken ends cut the guy's tire down. Aftermarket spring, name-brand vendor.

I have OE coil springs break, 1993 Grand Prix and my current 2002 Saturn SL2. Winter salt use + bad roads= fracture

OEM springs do break now and then, especially when subjected to the abuse these have taken. Here near Boston this winter has been brutal and the roads show it, I've caught a few good potholes and frost heves at highway speeds. This is why I think they stood up well.

Anyone who doesn't think springs should snap like that obviously don't own a BMW.

It's hard to comare just the lowering springs to coilovers because of other things done at the same time, I did the coilovers, 18" wheels, solid subframe bushings, HE offset differential bushings, axles, hubs and bearings ,391's and a complete differential overhaul. As I said, the roads here are brutal and I drive the hell out of this car.
