Shopping for Winter Wheels and Tires

Hi gang,

just thought i'd start peaking at what options are available for winter rims and tires. I currently have the 2LT/RS but for winter, i don't want 20" rims.

1) can i put on 18" rims?

2) recommendations on good winter tires?

3) where to get em? i'm looking at tirerack right now - any other suggestions? i just need cheap rims for winter time too..so wondering how to shop for rims.

I'm a complete newb to this.

1) Yes 18's will fit on all the V6 models

2) Personally I would either go with Pirelli Scorpions or Bridgestone Blizzaks

3) Discount Tire is the only other place I can think of but they don't ship to your home. They ship them to one of their stores and you have to go get them. I don't like using them because the closest Discount Tire to me is over an hour away.

Also Tirerack sells combos (rims and tires of your choice) so don't forget to check those out as well.

Last summer I used Tirerack to get one of their winter tire/rim packages - went with 20" Bridgestone Blizzaks and ST4 Sport Edition rims. Link to see all their packages = http://www.tirerack.com/snow/changeo...amefrom=wtpack

Does anyone know if the SS can use 18" wheels for winter? I don't see anyhting on TireRack. Thanks for any information/advice. Don't really want to drive in the snow but if I have to I should have the correct wheels.

i used my stock 20's on my ss with 245 blizzaks all the way around (yes they do fit all of the rims) v6's will have no problem with 18" wheels.

yes. stock rims with the blizzaks and about 100 pounds in the trunk to keep her planted, and she was a tank in that little mini blizzard we had. Its all in how you drive. If you drive cautiously, you will have no problems.

Depends on how they are made. Most 18's and 19's will not fit on the SS due to the Brembo calipers.

I've got a 2LT RS and yes, the Blizzaks were great in the snow.

Anyone thinking they can run the Summer Pirellis in temps below 40 degrees is asking for trouble - last mid-October with the snow/low temps we had I took out the Camaro after the snow on dry roads with the temp at 32 degrees and could feel I had no traction. Fortunately I had bought the Blizzaks off Tire Rack in late September and had them shipped to my Chevy Dealer who had agree to store my off-season tires - I went to swap the Pirellis for the Blizzaks the next day.

Does anyone know whether the 19" OEM Camaro wheels will clear the Brembo brake calipers on the SS models??

none of the stock v6 wheels will fit an SS. well that's what everyone on here says...just buy some nice summer wheels and rock the stockers during the winter

I would also choose the Blizzaks. I just checked Tire Rack, and you can shop for winter wheel/tire packages by car model and year. They have 3 recommended sizes for my 2LT/RS, but the top (least expensive)recommendation is:
17" Recommended: 225/65-17
That size tire would keep the same outside dimension as the stock 20" Pirellis.
Has anyone fit a 17" wheel on an LT? It looks like it should fit and clear the brake line, but I wanted to check if anyone has tried this.
Thanks,
Mike
