got hit by a delivery truck
I had a fairly minor fender bender with seemingly a ton of damage to my 45th anniversary SS. As I was pulling to a red light to stop I hit a dip in the road that veered me about 6” into the lane next to me, at which point an 18 wheeler delivery truck smashed into passenger wheel assembly. My tire was immediately blown off the rim, the rim was severely damaged and the rim got offset and is now touching the shock. It is unfortunate because I was basically stopped and he couldn’t have been going more than 5mph.
I had GEICO look at it and they can’t tell much but is worried it is totaled. He was worried about the area behind the wheel where the plastic is bowed, that metal piece behind it is structural and my have kinked and that would be irreparable. I know the pictures aren’t great, but if anyone has experience with this stuff or has seen similar damage, any thoughts on what kind of damage I'm looking at? His initial estimate was $3k but since he can't see the damage behind the wheel he thinks it could be up to $8k. thanks. |

There are insurance guys on here, but IMO you should be fine. There's nothing behind the wheel well. Looks like a fender, strut, and wheel and you're good to go. If they do wanna total it, I would tell them I want to buy it. A lot of times they give you first cut since no actual sales have to occur.

thanks guys. i'm wondering at what $ point of repairs it would be more worthwhile to pay for it myself rather than have the insurance pay, and then jack up my rate...

That looks pretty repairable to me. Just some suspension damage, no frame damage up there. Wheel and tire and the fender. Those trucks are pretty heavy, so a small hit from them could cause much damage. Good luck. Seen cars worse than that repaired.

that's true. ideally you can buy prepainted parts on ebay for cheap, my rear bumper looks OEM and that's how i got it. plus you can find a new rim on ebay as well. that would probably save me a lot of $$ but by the time they confirm it can be fixed it might take a week sitting in their shop waiting for the parts to come in and they would just charge me for it to sit there probably. i guess it won't hurt to ask.

Here comes all the physical damage experts. I was one for 40+ years for
4 major insurance companies. Never could settle a claim based on photos. Leave it up to the pros.

Got to take into account the state of used car sales right now as well. Used cars are through the roof and insurance companies now are paying to fix things that they normally would total out. Had a friend at work get hit in her 2016 Jeep Wrangler back in March. Did over $15k in damages more than it was worth and the other guys insurance company choose to repair it instead of replacing it cause fixing it was cheaper.

You won’t know what’s going on by pictures alone. 99% of the time you find more when you tear it apart. I used to do collision repair.

i just got it towed and the owner came and looked at it in person. he didn't think it was that bad but he does think it might approach $5k. but the insurance quoted $700 for an OEM rim, however i found one for $150 and i'm going to see if he'll let me get that one to him instead so i can save $500. then again at this point it might be moot if i'm going to use insurance.
