Thumper, just in case you haven't thought about this to the nth detail.
If you simply open up the slot and don't seal it to the intake, you will need to be able to shut it off if you drive in the rain or snow. If you don't you will get all kinds of salt and crap (pultice - ha! look it up, I had to also) in your engine compartment. I'm not sure of any performance gains relative to just simply doing a CAI. Of course this is all measurable if you want to go to the trouble for us (me LOL) However, that being said, it would be pretty cool to just to know i was functional and depending on how you finish it off, look very slick too. Looking forward to your project details.

The mailslot is only about 13 square inches max, if you don't count the grill in it. Not to mention that the steel backing plate that stiffens the whole top of the nose of the car is directly behind the mail slot. Definitely not worth messing with.

(No pie symbol) " pi(r)2 " were pi = 3.1416+/- and the radius (r) squared. So, if you have diameter of 4" round then the radius is equal to 2" (half the diameter.) Thus, 3.1416 X (2)2 = 12.5664 sq in. which would almost equal a 1"high x 12" wide slot. And would handle the required air flow. although the air velocity would increase ever so slightly. Actually a 1" x 12 5/8" slot would be equal to a 4" round port. and handle the exact air flow and exact velocity. If the slot is larger than 1'X12 5/8", it will still handle the required air flow. But the Velocity would go down. (less restriction) If you are saying that the 4" cai is actually 8" round (4" rad.) then the square inch would be 50.26. then you would need a slot 1" x 50 1/4" slot.

I'll blame it on age and KRAFT - " Kant Remember A F**king Thing" lol so the square inches will be about equal hmmmmm
