car feels sloppy a bit... will lowering springs help a lot?
I just got my SS, and while driving it, I've noticed the car feels a bit sloppy when trying to drive hard.
It feels like it has a lot of body roll and sag. When I break hard, the entire car has a huge weight shift to the front and the nose drops a ton. I think it might be affecting traction on the rear tires as the rears then start chirping, probably due to the weight shift and becoming light in the rear. Overall it just feels sloppy'ish, I'm trying to see what I can do to fix this. The car hits bumps really hard as if it had a stiff suspension, but I'm not seeing that translate into the handling. Will lowering springs help a lot with what I'm feeling?

Sways is probably your best bet. Drop springs will help but sways will make the bigger difference.

what you need is pedders daily driver kit, it will tighten up some soft spots in the bushings. your car will ALWAYS NOSE dive under hard brakeing, it is physics to help control this better shocks will help, pedders xa coilovers will give you some better control of this and are gm performance parts. lowering the car will reduce the dive the car is lower and you hit the bump stops faster..

I also recommend a Bushing kit.

These two are dead on. Here is a video that shows the improvement the Pfadt spring and sway bar package will make. I would also recommend the BMR Total Suspension bushing package. That should eliminate the "slop" you are feeling. If you have any questions about these products feel free to PM me.

I have not gotten sways yet, but I can tell you that after installing BMR springs, trailing arms, and rear cradle bushings it has already made a world of difference in the handling of the car. I took it up into the mountains last night after I got the bushings installed and it is amazing how much more put together and composed the car feels now. Sways are definitely my next move.

Is the installation of the lowering springs a professional job?

I’ve only been riding on my drop springs for the past two days. The before ride is still fresh in my mind. The before ride to me was never stiff. It always felt like I was floating over road and when not in a straight line it felt very sloppy. With just changing out the springs the first thing you notice is that when you get in the car it doesn’t move at all. When driving you feel more in touch with the road. When you hit a bump in the road, the car feels like it gives, but it snaps right back to business. Going around turns the car is much flatter! Currently I’m on the fence if I really need bigger sway bars; probably get them for Camaro Track meets! For everyday driving I don’t see myself really needing them.
Too bad they don’t make (to my knowledge) stiffer springs for the guys that don’t wont a drop, because the factory springs imo leave a lot to be desired. |

I would suggest you go with a front and rear sway bars for sure.A set of springs would help also. But if you are chosing between the bars and springs.I would choose the bars first.I will PM you a price on our bars and springs Chris Pelkowski chris@lsrperformance.com www.lsrperformance.com 229-245-9045 |

It's really easy to do yourself. Give yourself about 3 - 4 hours to get the old springs off and the new ones on. If you have access to an impact wrench to get the struts off the knuckles it is even faster. (Just don't use an impact on the strut shafts or knuckles to torque down the bolts during installation. A good impact wrench will snap the shafts and strip the aluminum in a heartbeat.)
Actually the hardest part is the alignment afterward. As I found out. most alignment shops do not have the settings in their computer for the camaro (which apparently they need even though I specified what I wanted the toe, camber, and caster set to), or have an older machine that cannot deal with the 20" rims. I eventually had to take mine to a dealership to get the alignment done. |
