Applying Wax with PC
Every 6 months I clay/polish/wax my car with a PC. Will the PC eventually deteriorate the clear coat? I took my DD to get washed/clayed/waxed and I told the guy that I always applied polish/wax using my PC. He gave me a look as if I had committed a detailing sin. Should application method be altered? (i.e. by hand vs. machine)
Thanks.

Should be fine if you're using a softer pad. Ie blue or black

Junkman says the only way you're gonna hurt your paint with a pc is if you hit the car with it like a club. Dude was just probably flabbergasted that you knew how to do any let alone all of that stuff. I do wax by hand though cuz by that time I'm pretty tired of hanging on to that PC.

Polishing is an abrasive process that does remove a microscopic amount of clear each time its done. Assuming you go with mild approaches only to address very fine imperfections its not enough to worry about - there is plenty of clear (relatively speaking) from the factory to work with for a long time. Waxing is non-abrasive. You're depositing a coat of something over the paint so no material is removed. So long story short, you're fine. The only process that removes material is polishing and even that needs to be done in excess to be an issues. Quote:

I can't add anything to the process advice above, it's spot on.
I wouldn't assume a look to mean something, I would ask him what his procedure/technique is. If the car comes back looking better than your way, he might help you with your detailing skills. If his advice differs from the above, you might want to consider someone else. |
