OK DUMB ?

I have'nt been on a drag strip in 40 yrs. I see all these guys heating their tires in the box. how are they doing that? Do they have line-locks? Do they hold their brakes and just let their engine overpower their rear brakes? If thats it it sound like a great way to destroy their clutch, AT or rear brakes.

Line Loc makes it easy. Without Line Loc, rear brakes are adjusted to be less "grabby". Most dedicated racers have a Line Loc, and many recreational racers do, too. Typically, burnouts are done in 2nd gear...briefly...on water, which aids the initial tire splippage to get 'em spinning. Putting heat in the rear tires increases gription for the tire's specific rubber compound. Not all tires require a burnout, and therefore not all racers do them, although the vast majority of slick-equipped cars will bite better with a burnout...
