Split front bumper on early 70's models?

I'm trying to learn about the 71, which I'll have some day, and why I'm seeing some with a split and some without. It's not just the 71 I'm seeing but I am not sure what the split actually means, if anything.

I figured this would be the best place to learn/ask the question.

Anyone know?

The 70-73 2nd gens with the split bumper are Rally Sport models.

Check this out. You'll find it educational: http://www.nastyz28.com/faq/2gcdiff.html

The split bumper is part of the Rally Sport package, which also included the round turn signals to the inside of the headlights. This picture is a real Rally Sport.

ZL575BumbleBee mentions that he added the split bumpers to his non-Rally Sport Camaro, and you can see that his turn signals are below the bumpers.

Additional trivia, I'm sure you're all familiar with the term "COPO". Well the car pictured above has the three piece spoiler that in 1970 required a Central Office Production Order (COPO 9796) to have that spoiler installed, otherwise it came with the shorter one-piece "Duckbill" spoiler. After all the short spoilers got used up, all Z/28's got the tall three piece spoiler some time in 1971.

Like they said they are Rally Sports. You could get a RS, a SS, or a Z28, or a combination of them. You could order a RS/Z28, or a RS/SS. Besides the different front end you also got hide away wipers, chrome trim around the windows and hood, and a few other dress up things.

If you go into my "view my garage" section you will see how a 71 RS/Z28 came except I painted my front spoiler the color of the car. It came from the factory black.

Also in 1973 you could order a "Type LT" package that gave you an upgraded interior with any Camaro.
