I know Big Navy has told all the Navy activities not to hire any more civilian employees until this congressional budget crap gets works out. My wife JUST got a job as a GS-5 in August, she had been looking/applying for 4 years. She had spousal preference (Ive been in the Navy almost 19 years) and now we wonder if she will get laid off, or have unpaid furloughs or what...

All of DoD has a hiring freeze right now. Under the federal service your resume can be as long as you want, so don't follow the one page rule...as many pages and as much information as you can. Different agencies use different HR Info Systems. The newer systems make you answer questions and if you answer that you're an expert you need to explain where in your resume your expert experience is (dates and title will usually do).

The Navy also implemented a hiring freeze last week, a lot is on hold right now for those that were in the application process and did not yet get approved let alone new ones trying.

If you're going through USAJobs, which I assume you are, make sure to use their resume builder feature and don't just upload your own. There are critical things that must be in the resume that are usually not for civilian jobs. The resume builder in USAJobs will force you to put in the required information.

Also, a federal resume should be around 3-5 pages long, and should clearly illustrate that you meet the minimum qualifications. Start by analyzing the job posting thoroughly and viewing the questionnaire. If you can't answer the questions on the questionnaire with C's, D's, or E's, you will most likely not be best qualified for the position.

Also, check out the OPM website. OPM manages the hiring process, job codes, etc for government jobs. You can find all kinds of core competencies for the series and grade you are applying for.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to PM me. I'm a transition counselor for military members and a certified federal career coach and job search trainer.

Good info here. Although I am in a WG position, I dont think the process is much different. I spent three years trying to get a DOD position before I got one that I really did not want just to get my foot in the door. After a year and half, on Monday I will start the position I wanted to begin with, although not the ideal location!
Every job listing has requirements that must be shown on the resume and if they are not there you won't even be considered. I also learned that most positions are filled from within so you can't be too picky, that is how I ended up here at Holloman, now just waiting for these airplanes to be relocated to FL!

I bolded the only section i do not agree with, i used the USAjob's resume builder for 3 years no position. Uploaded my own resume and i now sit in a GS-12 postion. Just my opinion from experience. (it could have just been a fluk)

Make sure you put your hours per week for each position too. That way the HR specialist can see it's a FT position.

Just to give whomever a heads up... There is a GS hiring freeze right now. You can keep applying, but don't expect a bite. Even the government doesn't have enough confidence in the government to complete more new hires.

GL-12.
Don't ever, ever... ever use anything in your résumé that could possibly read like a job description from USAjobs. It's insulting to your reader.

Use bullet points
Lose the 1st person
Lose the job description if you already included it
Add about 100 more examples of stuff you claim to have done
Add 100 more action verbs, facilitated, initiated, implemented (key words)

This should get you going.

USAjobs is the main listing for .gov positions so good place to look, as mentioned before. You can have as many as 4 resumes within USAjobs so you can upload your own or tailer one for the job you are applying to. Key words were mentioned a few times and is the most important thing to remember. It's like this, the person and/or system scanning resumes IS NOT the person looking to hire someone. It is someone paid to rack and stack applicants. 9 times out of 10 that person doesnt know anything about the job, they are looking for words. Hit enough words and you may be refered for consideration.

Most times these "key words" are in the job announcement itself, listed under "KSA's" (knowledge, skills and abilities). If you know what job series you are applying for, look here https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-over...#url=Standards

As for a security clearance it is "must be able to qualify for" statement since .gov clearances are a little different investigation than civilian sector.

Happy hunting
