New Chevy SS auto has more hp/tq

Sorry if I missed a previous post on this, but with the new sedan's name it was impossible to weed thru the results.

I see the new CHEVROLET SS sedan is rated at 415 hp/415 tq with an automatic. I could not find "L99" on any of the specs. So will the Camaro L99 stay at 400 hp/410 tq for 2014 or get the SS upgarde?
If not, that kinda bites that the re-fresh doesn't include the 2014 SS engine

Could it be an LS3 paired with an automatic transmission like the G8 GXP?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_G8#G8_GXP

Quote:
The production version of the GXP was more powerful with its LS3 V8 producing 415 hp (309 kW) and 405 lb·ft (549 N·m) of torque.

Pricing for the 2014 Chevy SS will start at $44,470 when it hits showroom floors this fall.

Also as we predicted, the SS will be subject to the gas-guzzler tax (at an amount that has yet to be determined), since its LS3 V-8 is devoid of fuel-saving technology such as direct injection, variable valve timing, and cylinder deactivation.

SON OF A *****!! I just found an article and it IS an LS3 with the 6 speed auto. Why can GM do this in 2014 yet we have been (and continue to be) stuck with AFM since 2010?

Welcome to CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy). GM needs the AFM equipped L99 with its better mpg to average in given the fairly large sales volume of Camaros. Even 1/2 mpg can make a difference if volumes are high enough.

The new SS will be sold in such small numbers that it won't make much difference, and it may have been cheaper to use the LS3 since the SS is built in Australia. In Australia the L99 w/AFM would not sell so all 6.2L Holdens (SS is the American name) are LS3s. They would have to make special arrangements to install the L99.

My $.02

SS Auto has a little more HP than the Camaro L99 SS? Big deal. Camaros stand out in a crowd with their beautiful lines and aggressive stance. The SS... not so much. Still don't understand why Chevy even came out with it.

I do, I'd consider buying one for non Camaro type days, like going to Walmart. Plus, how about people with kids and dogs and what not, four doors makes a difference. More performance models please. Just like the 60's, put a big motor in everything.

They don't plan to sell that many and they aren't trying to avoid the gas guzzler tax. Which is why the GTO/G8 was "underpowered" and why the Camaro auto has AFM.

IMO, I think it might be taking the place of the SS Impala. I had one and not only would it run, it was loaded and a very smooth ride. I would consider one.

I'd guess it has more to do with the gas guzzler tax than CAFE. With the L99, everyone who buys a Camaro SS automatic avoids paying any GG tax. With the LS3, chances are they'd have to pay an extra $1000.

However, with the SS sedan it probably would have got hit with the GG tax either way. So the L99 would only determine which tax you'd have to pay: perhaps $1000 instead of $1300. Depending on how GM determines their pricing, it probably works out to being cheaper for the buyer (and for GM) to just go with the LS3.
