I don't like the way most instrument panels are designed around the nav screen in the center.

When I ordered a new Corvette, I did not order nav, mainly because if you get nav, GM removes the auxillary input jack.

That being said, if I ran a car company, EVERY model would have factory nav available.

It's basics of modern automobiles.

This is another case of GM telling potential customers what they should want, rather than listening and making products more people want to buy.

I'm happy they added a BLUE SS model, they do listen when they think it will cost them sales.

Don't flame me! I'm gasoline

The sad fact is that you are so correct by pointing this out.

I dont give a ratz a$$ for sat radio, I NEVER LISTEN to radio only mp3/cds!!! Why do I have that option but all high end cars have sat nav as as standard this car dont even have it as an option!!!

BOOOOOO!!!

The car is ordered but obviously with no sat nav. Now I gotta drape ugly wires for an aftermarket one or run 5mins on a battery powered one.

I know I am disappointed also, I thought it would be optional since this is a $30k vehicle. I am going to wait because the navigation system might come a year or two after the Camaro is released. I love navigation but like you hate the tacky on dash navigation systems, they look so ugly. Plus I am not too crazy about the look of the radio, a touch screen IMO would look better.

I am confused, unless you order the option how does it raise the price of the car?

Spreading the costs. I have assumed a bunch of numbers here so don't take any of them as fact. A nav system costs around $2000. Now the components themselves cost less than $2000, probably closer to $500 -this is more than portable units because they won't be buit in the same quantity and will have more complex casings and mounts. A good portion of the money for options gets pocketed by dealers, lets say half to a third, so thats about $800. That means that GM 'pockets' $700 from every $2000 nav system. Lets assume that 10 000 Camaro's each year would have been ordered with nav. That makes for $7 000 000. However, the costs of development as well as the extra tooling required to make 2 different interior sets would likely exceed that. So the price of every model will have to go up to absorb these costs. So rather than adding $1000 to every nav unit (that would decrease sales of the units, requiring a further price hike) it is more appealing to add $100 to every car.

^Sadly he's right. The R&D to put in the nav would increase overall R&D, but some proper budgeting pricing could fix this. Even if the Nav was another 3k, it's still an option.

Also, this platform is already out there. I couldn't imagine it'd take them a whole lot of R&D for something the Australians already have.

Look at the G8, same exact car rebadged w/o half the options the Holden has...

So everyone is getting hissy over $100? Unbelievable.

Well I am still holding out that the option will come out a year or two after the release. If not I will still buy the car, it's just an option I have come to love. Especially when driving around this area at night. I am waiting on the HUD anyway.

I don't have GPS in my car but I do have it on my phone. I actually just ordered a car mount that clips onto the AC vents to hold the phone while I'm using it. My phone battery performs pretty well while I'm using GPS, and if I need to charge it I'll just plug it in like i'd have to do anyway. Personally, I feel that in-dash GPS units are way overpriced. Although it is nice having one display that handles everything and integrates perfectly in the car's interior, $2k+ for something that's a PITA to update, non-mobile, and will probably lower resale value? No thanks. Mobile GPS units and GPS enabled phones are the future; once people realize that in-dash units aren't much more than a status symbol or fad they'll become obsolete on all but higher-end vehicles.

Yea I have seen those cell phone GPS systems and I don't like them, until they come out with one with a 7" or 8" screen I think I will pass. About the GPS systems being a "fad" I think you couldn't be further from the truth. On my way home from New York today I saw 2 Honda Civic's pass by, they both had the navigation system. These were cars with Pennsylvania plates by the way.

If a market exist for Supercharges that cost $6,000 (Which can be labeled as a status symbol) I think from here on out we can expect navigation systems to become optional equipment even on the cheapest of cars. Don't believe me? Check out the Suzuki SX4 and 2009 Honda Fit. Every day that goes by I see more and more cars with them.

You check every new and upcoming car most of them offer the navigation system, if no one was going to buy them automakers would of stopped offering the option by now. I still remember a guy all these years ago that told me keyless entry was a fad that would die off.

I have On-Star turn-by-turn in my 2008 Buick Enclave. I've had several occasions when it didn't work. It uses CDMA cell phone technology to send the directions. Look at a verizon coverage map (they use CDMA). If you aren't in their area (base or roaming) you won't get On-star. I keep a Magellan unit in the car for trips. I like the other info, like estimated arrival time and visual representation of the roads.

The iPhone should have turn by turn based applications on it by the time the camaro rolls into dealerships - if not, slightly after. Big ol screen on it
