First Oil Change and Why
Seems to be a wide range of when the first oil change is done. I've seen 1000 miles, 1500 miles and factory suggested. What did you do and why?

1,000 miles for me. I wanted to make sure I got a higher quality K&N filter on the car and rid the engine of the first oil batch because it would be more likely to have more metal in it. While I was under the car I installed a Skip Shift eliminator. Make sure you note the location of the oil level on your dip stick once you have changed everything - this can vary a small amount by car.

When brand new I like to put a magnet drain plug in. Somewhere in the 500 to 1000 ish miles, I change the oil. From then on changed about every 3 - 5K.
I believe the main advantage of the early change and the magnet is to get the break in metal out. And it will be seen on the magnet. It could be argued that the filter also keeps the debris out of the engine.... but what one thing is before the filter and has had a track record of jamming up and killing the oil pressure? The oil pump's pressure relief valve sees unfiltered oil. I've worked on a ton of cars with stuck pressure relief valves, but none of them were mine. Either just lucky, or less debris is better. |

Speaking of filters, the manual just lists the oil filter as fitting the 6.2L so does this mean it is the same for all 6.2L motors (L99.LS3 and LSA)? And what size magnetic oil pan drain bolt? Is it M12-1.75?

I changed all the fluids: engine, tranny and diff. around 1600 miles. I had tracked it the weekend before at 1500 miles. I changed all of the fluids because of the day at the track and I knew I would be driving to CF3 and putting 2800 miles on the car round trip.
Does anybody have the correct part number for the magnetic oil plug to fit a ZL1???

All the wet sumps use the same filter pf48. The LS7 & 9 dry sumps use the filter with a thicker canister due to the higher oil pressure, upf48r.
The magnetic plug I use is from Pep Boys, OIL Tite brand M12 x 1.75, part # 65372. Mine is an SS, but I'd think the LSA would be the same plug. |

$14.99 each, and I'd suggest that you buy extra aluminum washers (their part number SW-03) as I believe that they need to be replaced with each oil change. They're a simple 12mm piece, so I plan to look at Home Depot or Lowe's to see if they have them locally to avoid having to order more from Montana. |

I just changed mine today at 1496 miles for the same reasons everyone else mentions. Taking it on a 2hr trip today and I can't wait to floor it.

Great input. Thanks. I am taking it in this morning at 1700 miles. Break in is over and a few hard romps after that. Using the K&N filter and magnetic plug.

At almost 500 miles I did my rear-diff/M6-tran with Royal Purple.
Then did the engine with Mobil 1 Oil and Filter, and put a Filter-Mag (http://www.shopfiltermag.com) on the filter to trap any fine metal particles. |

Check engine oil with every refueling and add if necessary. Oil and fuel consumption may be higher than normal during the first 2 414 km (1,500 mi). I hope this was helpful. Brandon Chevrolet Customer Service
