As to polishing outside in the sun. I'm concerned that dust/dirt will fall on the car as I'm polishing. I take it I shouldn't polish outside unless there is no wind?
You should never polish outside.

I've never tried polishing outdoors. What is the reason behind not doing it ?

It's a pain lol, hot panels don't like being rubbed and getting hotter.

You have to use more product.

You have to use more pads.

You have to be mindful of the panel temps and pad condition.

Oh and you want to be mindful of wind and dust too.

As I said, it's a pain.

I hate to rant but I dislike the connotation.

To get us back on topic....

With my convertible I use my car dryer (AKA leaf blower) to blow dust off the top and paint before I even rinse. It works pretty well to get dust/pollen off the top and minimize having to get it wet. After I'm all done I use a lint roller on the canvas.

Your thoughts on this approach?

I am glad to read this BUT scared at the same time that I am going to miss something and cause paint issues later! LOL. Once I do this process, I am sure I will get it. I dont use car washes. My car is 3 months old. I let the rain wash it. its garaged. I notice spots on my vinyl stripes, I will buy "turtle ice' or UV protectant for the stripes. I have 2 dents that I am getting removed (dang dings from cars parked too close) then, a touch up on a few paint scratches, then, I can focus on my waxing!
