So I went to look at a low mileage ZL1 yesterday at my dealer, around 3500 miles. As expected it had lots of swirling, since I expected it I was not surprised and really not bothered by it as I'll correct it.

What I was surprised with was the below. This is one on "many" scratches all over the car and when I say many I'm talking 12+, most of which I was able to snag a nail on. I have no idea who or how this car was taken care of, such a shame.

Anyway Is this kind of damage repairable without a repaint and if so what would it take?

Without actually being there, I'd wager that many of the scratches could be compounded/wetsanded out. Almost all cars (new or used) will have some paint issues that will need very minor to moderate correction.

The question is whether you should be doing a lot of correction for the price of the car. I would shop other dealers and see some other examples and prices before deciding on this one.

I can tell you this is certainly not normal scratches.

At the very least you'd be able to reduce damage like that to less than noticeable, but hard to say if its 100% correctable until you actually start taking a machine to it.

Double whammy- paint issues and not much 3/36 bumper to bumper left.
If they're at 50k on the price of the car I'd have to see some movement further downward $$ to straighten out the paint.
Original purchase 10/2012?

^Yea U know what?? That's a bit too much correcting that an owner would need to do for $50k. At the risk of some of those scratches being permanent I'd look elsewhere (I am a stickler for exterior perfection.....and being a gm product owner go figure).

Its been my experience that even some bad looking scratches can straighten out with the right correction techniques. At least have someone (preferrably a car guy outside the dealership) look at this before committing any money down on it.

The scratches may only be the tip of the iceberg as they say with this one. What else has this car endured ? Buyer beware. If you can get the price down and you are satisfied buy it, if not run.

Pm me the last 8 digits of the vin. I can check it out for you if your on the fence with the car and it's service history. The scratches can be repaired/corrected. The dollars have to make sence to you and the market where you are buying.

If the car was abused that much visibly, how much was abused that you can't see. The paint would be the least of my worries in buying that car.

Always a consideration and a good point.

Don't judge a car by the paint! I am just saying, I take very good care of my vehicle, but the paint is in terrible condition because of stray cats and what not. I do have scratches like that, and on my hood (which are hideous). I am sure they can be repaired beyond notability. Use some of that black paste wax when you're done and Viola!

You always use condition and reasonable expectations to drive down the price on a used car. 50K is too much for that car with good paint if you ask me.
