I have 295/50R15s on the rear and 265/50R15s on the front. They are 15X8 rims. The old style of B.F.G. Radial TAs use to grab the rear fender lip at times with 4 people in the car and going in a driveway or something. I sometimes had rubbing on the inside over big bumps. The new design seems to have a more rounded edge.?.? The fronts do rub on the frame when fully turned. They sometimes rub on one of the fender bolts when turning. But I think I solved that with a few taps of the body hammer.?.? An additional 1/2" back spacing might solve it, though...

I have to add that my suspension is a lot stiffer than stock. I have some kind of ladder bars on the rear (were on it when I bought it) and multi-leaf springs. If I put all my weight on the back of the car/trunk, it will only go down about 1/2 inch. To get it to go further, I really have to bounce on it... The front has 1" lowered, progressive springs. But they haven't really settled in, yet. I can get about 1" of travel up front if I put my weight up there...

So, having said all that, I would say 275s on the back is pretty safe. I had 245/60R14s on the front before. They didn't rub unless I bottomed out (old springs that were shot, car sat about 3" lower with them, and probably no bump stops).

Geez, I'm not sure if I helped or not! ;-)

Gotcha I'm just debating on what to put on. I've heard some people say 255's is the biggest thing that will fit under stock suspension. Also is ther any suspension mods for mono leafs?

255 will fit with the right back space
275 will also fit, but you might rub
Lots of factors come into play such as, but not limited to: Wheel well lip, shock relocation kit, Move the rear leaf spring in with a relocation kit and rim back space/an size.
As far as the mono leaf if you want a leaf spring car upgrade to a multi leaf you will be money ahead.

275-60-15 or 275-50-17 will fit in the rear with the right backspace and fender lip rolling. I had 15X8 with the 60-15 with 4 1/2 backspace and it was about perfect after rolling the fender lips. I upgraded to 17X9 with 5 1/4 backspace and I had to add the thinnest available spacer to stop rubbing on the inner fender. I have had luck with a 225 up front, but every time I tried 235 or wider I rubbed. I have a 225-50-17 on the front now on 17X8 with a 4 1/2 BS. This would be perfect with a 4 3/4 or 5" BS.

TIBS,
Can you post your car from a side view so I can see hw that tire size fills the wheelwell? That is a great color btw.

Ok, just thought I'd throw my sizes in the mix for you.

I'm running Boss Motorsport wheels with 18" F and 20" R. I didn't pick these out as I got them from a friend who had them on a '71 RS he bought. He wanted to lower his car and they were definitely going to rub on his.

Anyway, they are 235/40R18 up front and 285/30ZR20s out back. I'm running Koni shocks and SPC tubular upper/lower control arms with SPC springs up front as well. Rear is stock monoleaf. I only get a slight amount of rub and it has to be a pretty significant dip to cause issues. Front and rear sway bars from Helwig help with body roll in turns also. Along with the tires, do yourself a favor and check your subframe bushings. If these have sagged over the years, they can add to your body to tire clearance as well. Oh, and get some subframe connectors. She'll handle like she's on rails.

For those that want to do the math, here's an easy tire calc tool to know what size tire you're looking at.

Using a tire size of 235-40-18

To determine your tire tread width in inches - Take first number of tire size and divide by 25.4. This converts from metric to inches.

235/25.4 = 9.252" or a 9.3" wide tread

To determine the sidewall height - Use the result from tread width and multiply that times the middle tire size number divided by 100 or 9.3*(40/100)

9.3"*(40/100) = 9.3*0.40 = 3.72" This is only for (1) side of the tire though. Keep that in mind.

SO, to get the overall wheel/tire height combination, multiply the last answer, 3.72*2 and add it to your wheel height.

3.72*2+18 = 7.44+18 = 25.44"

I have this in an excel spreadsheet I can email so all you have to do is input your tire size and you're done. It's handy when you want to compare different tire sizes to see how close you can get to the same size.

This come in handy recently on my wife's '79 SB Chevy truck. It's been lowered, and we wanted to change wheels and tires. The spreadsheet allowed me to put different tires in to find one that would keep the same aspect ratio even though we went from a 15" rim to an 18" rim.

PM me if anyone would like to have it.

Good luck.

I so far have only got the fronts in the backs went on backorder until the 18th. I tried the fronts (4.5 bs) on the back and they cleared by a bunch maybe 2 inches. the rims I ordered for the back have 5.25 back spacing. should look good. Here is a before.
