That's because a fire needs oxygen to burn. Oxygen only makes up about 19% of air so "fuel" can only burn at a certain rate. Add pure oxygen to the fuel and it will burn at a much faster/explosive rate. Key point being, combustible gases need to be present. Nitrous oxide is not a combustible gas.

Side note: the reason nitrous oxide increases power is because at elevated temperatures it will decompose leaving gases rich with oxygen and allowing more fuel to be burned at a faster rate. It also cools the incoming air making it more dense and allowing more oxygen to enter the combustion chamber for the same volume.

But it contributes to a bigger splosion.

In a nitrous failure, often the intake pools up with tons of fuel and nitrous. Then boom, intake blows up. Now you've got fuel everywhere, from the carbs, lines still pouring out... and if the nitrous is stuck on - tons of nitrous gas under the hood. Even if the master cutoff is off, the fuel can leak down onto the headers.... then your second and even bigger explosion.

You never want to get near a nitrous or nitro car that is having a problem. They can be bombs.

Yeah...I get that. I just think it's misleading to call it a "nitrous explosion." Without the nitrous, it will most likely still explode. It just won't be as big of an explosion.
