That aside- I ordered the automatic. The manual was fun to test drive, but I knew that in the long run I'd be happier with the auto. Others might hate the auto. I did notice that the clutch was pretty touchy, but I know I'd get used to it if I had gone that route.

2SS was my first manual car. Pulling off of the dealers lot was the first time I had ever touched a clutch pedal.

80% of my driving is in traffic and I absolutely do not regret it.

I was discouraged at first but once I got the hang of it there was no going back.

Thank you guys for the replies, you have really helped me out. Especially Bryans last post, it seems like hes in the same boat as me.

These forums are great, its amazing how after researching and listening to others stories how you change your mind on certain things. I was actually going to order the camaro today, but after reading stories and looking at countless pictures I keep changing small options. I started off with an all blacked out camaro 1SS (non RS) Automatic. Now Im 100% sure Im getting a black 1SS/RS Manual w/ Cyber Grey stripe package......right now lol.

Maximum speeds the auto SS vs (manual SS)
1- 37(52)
2- 64(81)
3- 99(111)
4- 132(159)
5- 180(189)
6- 227(280)

As you can see 1st gear goes all the way to 52 mph in the manual. But this represents redline shifting (as if you were drag racing). The A6 automatic is geared differently to make better use of its power.

If you were driving casually, you would shift at a much slower speed for each gear.

I went with the Auto because I wanted to get to the next red light before my freind with the Manual.

But seriously, I think everyone should learn how to drive with a manual transmission car. And I also think you'd be fine buying it and learning with it. It won't take long to get the hang of it.

Yeah, let's stoke those flames again!

Anyway, on topic, if fun & control are what appealed to you about a manual, go for it. Might as well learn now! On the other hand, if what appeals to you about manuals is that strangers at gas stations will think you're a manlier man because of your transmission, that's about the worst possible reason.

It is fun rowing through the gears. If you want to drag race then get the automatic. Properly prepped, you will be faster in a drag race with an automatic than with a manual. Note I said you. The car probably will be as well, but few can race a stick as well or better than they can an automatic. If this is just a driver the stick will be fine. If you drive a lot in stop-n-go traffic you will appreciate that 'it's an automatic'.

Didn't Hunt James teach us in "The Manly Man's Guide to the Manly Man" that Real Men only drive manuals? :-)

I got the manual for that "old skool" feel (really I just wanted a Hurst shifter).

I dunno,
I'm gonna have to disagree w/ my M6 brothers on this one.....the OP has never driven a manual before. It's easy for us that have been driving one for years to tell him to get one. Look, it's a big investment, a new car and you want to enjoy it. If that means an automatic, so be it. I would only buy a M6 but I've been driving one for years. If I didn't know how, although I can learn, it might not be the best way to enjoy my new 30K plus car. Don't worry about what others think, both M6 and Auto are great cars and options. Drive what you want, but make sure it's what you want not what you think others would like better.

Would it be wise to get a manual 1SS and use that right off the bat, or just get the auto transmission? I currently have an automatic '07 Mustang, and had alot of fun in it, but got sick of everyone saying "oh its automatic"

Is it tough to learn manual? I know the basics of it, never applied it though lol.
If your in NYC Ferrari driving school provides a 2hour Manuel driving instruction and they take you in to heavy traffic after you get used to it. If your worried try it out. The Camaro will not be as easy to drive as there Corrollas but it does not take long to get used to it.

Manuals are fun, My 1975 has a TKO-600 ( 5 speed, switched from an auto) and a BBC and it is easy to drive in traffic. But, there are days when I wish I had the auto, and than days I am glad I put the manual in it. Since my NEW Camaro will be my D.D. , I will get the auto just because my real toy has a stick. Now, If your getting the 2010+ Camaro as your toy, get the manual!

Besides, auto's are superior to manuals in the drag racing scene anyways which I like to do alot of. Nothing sucks more than missing a gear and losing because of it!! And if anyone says they haven't, they are lying to you or shift like my grandmother!!

I think either way you will be happy.

Man, another year before I can buy mine...:(
