Why is my left half-shaft smaller than the right ???

This may just be a question of ignorance, but it doesn't logically make sense....

While changing the fluid in my rear diff today, I was looking over the beautiful design of the Camaro. I also happen to notice that my left half-shaft is almost half the diameter of the right half shaft.

Seems strange. Is this by design?

Pictures below show what I am talking about. The first picture is the left half-shaft (drivers side) and the second picture is the right half-shaft.

Yes, that is by design. It is to help minimize wheel hop under hard acceleration.

Yup, by design. Something they learned when developing the ZR1 and CTS-V

Whew........... that's good to know.

My mind has spun a few laps over this. I even entertained the thought that I had a V8 right half shaft and a V6 left half shaft. The rear ends between the cars are probably completely different, but I have never looked under a LS or LT.

Thanks I can put that one to rest.
