Pros and cons of a short throw shifter?
Hey guys,
I'm on the fence about getting a short throw shifter. I figgure for every gimme there is a gotchia, I'de assume that in exchange for a shorter throw you have to exert more force? Its a daily driver and I dont want a shifter that takes tons of effort. Also, I notice the shifters like the Hurst are higher than the stock shifter. How is that as far as comfort goes? I feel like it would be kind of awkward, I like to rest my arm on the armrest like im sure most drivers do... Maybe im just confused |

GlennP,
Traditionally you should not worry about exerting more for with a short throw, in fact normally they are easier when designed properly. They follow shifting gates better, have less slop and play, which equals less force. The hurst shift with the factory installed shift knob still sits in the same plane as the stock unit. They are a great unit for quality and installation. In my opinion there isn't a gotchia if you buy the right shifter. Hurst is certainly a great unit. If you like take a trip to our webpage http://www.ipsmotorsports.net and view some of the shifters we have to offer, and let me know if you have any questions Best Regards |

Thanks, Brandon!
So, I could take this http://www.ipsmotorsports.net/catalo...oducts_id=3665 and still use the factory shift knob? |

Go for it. No downside at all. Feels better. I've put a short throw on every manual transmission car I've ever owned.

HURST makes a quality product. We highly recommend this short shifter and so do our customers.

I put the MGW shifter in mine and it is awesome! There are no cons to installing a short throw. I definitely wont go back to a stock shifter, lol.

I've got the MGW and only give it a 7 out of 10. On the plus side, it's more solid than the stocker, and did have a much shorter throw than stock, but I've since added the retro shifter and ball to it which is a longer stick and made the throw closer to the original stock.
On the con side the MGW is notchy, and feels like it's grinding or "rolling chunky logs" going into second under sedate to normal driving/shifting. I don't think this is the famous 2nd gear grind as it actually feels better shifting at over 4,000 RPM. The MGW still seems to want to drop back to 4th when intending to shift from 5th to 6th--even when I really focus on pushing to the right to get it into 6th. Prior to the install I actually liked the stock shifter--it was smooth and quiet and I never went into 4th from 5th. Granted it had a sloppy feeling and had a long throw, but all-in-all the stocker wasn't bad.

The Hurst shifter referenced in this thread and in that video.... Is that the same one GM installs in the factory as an option?
