In search of the perfect lap timer / video system
Hi guys,
I've been using Harry's Lap Timer (Grand Prix) on my iPhone in combination with a high accuracy GPS and a plug-in wireless OBD module for speed / throttle / RPM overlay. Trouble is, it works about 2/3 of the time. I get "unknown video error" and other errors. Sometimes it records lap times but not video. I'm tired of fussing with it and am ready to upgrade. Here's what I'm looking for: 1. NOT a lap timer application in a phone, something standalone and more high-end. I've tried several phone apps and I'm ready for something more serious. 2. Portable - I have two track cars and want to move it quickly and easily between the two. 3. Integrated video and sensors, hopefully all in one self-contained unit 4. Easy to use and process data. Easy to start / stop at the track (very important!). Easy to load track maps or record a new track (For example, Thunderhill 5-mile is so new it probably doesn't exist in many canned track maps). With Harry's it's nearly perfect and automatic- just overlay the video with OBD port data and the video is ready with the push of a button. If Harry's were more reliable, I would continue to use it. 5. OBD data - speed / throttle / RPM etc. 6. Accurate GPS 7. A bonus would be if it has an easy way to stitch together your best lap, corner-by-corner analysis, Etc. 8. Easy to use. I said it twice because this is the primary goal! Does something like this exist or am I dreaming? Thanks Todd

Trackmate and all the add-ons. However it will be in the $2k+ range
I have an older model, the GPS is better than my Galaxy S4. I'm going to give the external bluetooth GPS & ODB2 dongles a try in the Camaro next weekend - see how it works. One of the racers on Corvette forum uses it to record video. |

I was/am just doing research. You will have to direct your questions to the people in those threads...

I've been using harry's but I use the android version and external gps. I have a galaxy s5 and I shut down all other apps on track day and it has worked great for months. I autocross almost every weekend.

Motec is the best but crazy money
AIM is the next best and expensive and italians are not known for software...but it can do math channels which is cool. Traqmate is the easiest and when simply comparing laps and drivers is the best imho...I have had one for years....a basic model...for @$700 and I just put it in the trunk and it records at 20hz automatically and then I do my analysis on a laptop at the track and when I'm at home you can make fun videos like this http://youtu.be/mKHyicV4iaM I do not need the in car display lap times and predicitive timing..I can get that with the free version of RaceChrono on an android phone taped down in the car if I really need it. I am biased as I am a Traqmate dealer so contact me if you want one but I had AIM in a Stohr and it was good but complex. What is most important is your understanding and ease of use of the analysis software. They all have demo versions just download them and try them then decide...I believe then you will see the merits of Traqmate. Demo these: AIM Traqmate DL1 Vbox Race Keeper then decide.
