Still going through this decision process... I've pretty much narrowed it down to a 2SS/RS or an 08/09 C6... I'll make up my mind in the next 3 or 4 months though! But like many of you, i've considered numerous cars:

335i
370z
SRT challenger
GT500
'06 Z06 (still too much $ for a 5 year old car)
07/08 Escalade

Was considering a 370Z but the local dealership didn't have any in stock. I considered a new mustang with the 5.0L but once I test drove the Camaro it was settled.

If I remember right, Audi A5 or a BMW was my original intent after deciding on car over SUV, but I wanted to shop around. Japanese cars were all to small for my liking so I looked American. lack of a independent suspension was my gripe with looking at a muscle cars, as much as I admired them.

I flirted with getting a used GT500 or GTO but when I found out the Camaro had IRS, I made the call. It was a long process, but it was the right call.

I would have considered a Challenger, Charger, Saturn, Cobalt, Journey or a Cruz.
In other words:
Any Chrysler or GM product.

When I was looking... I was looking at the Lexus IS 250, Mustang 5.0, or the Camaro. The Camaro was what made male sex organ hard (no homo).

I considered all the new, old-style American Muscle cars. I've always wanted one. With the Mustang, the only one I would have even considered was the Shelby. But, hubby needed a truck, too, didn't want a Ford. The Challenger SRT8 was too big and I couldn't see over the dash well enough. So, Camaro it was! I'm TOTALLY happy with it!

After deciding to get out of my 04 Cobra I spent about a month going back and forth on the SS and the 5.0, in the end the SS won out. As a die-hard Ford man my whole life it was a hard thing not to stay loyal to the blue oval. I have never had a 2nd thought on my decision.

That would have been an Audi A5 for me.
Which is an awesome car IMO, but nevertheless I am glad to have bought a Camaro and do not regret the purchase not even a little.
