Exhaust for Dummies

As an Exhaust Dummy, I'm looking for some advice.

I really really dislike the stock exhaust on my 1le and am now in the market to replace it. Since I have a V8, I want to hear it but I don't want to wake the neighbors. Also, I want to hear it when I'm driving and at idle.

I love the sound of the Flowmaster Outlaw but can't tell the volume level on YouTube videos. Everyone seems to say that they are almost PAINFULLY loud which isn't what I want.

What suggestions do y'all have? Even if they're just suggestions on how to learn more.

Thanks in advance

Find a camaro club or car show/meet in your area.
Go meet new friends and listen to their cars.
Go for a ride, as cabin volume may sway you one way or another.

Good luck?

Thanks, we've got a big car show coming up here in Missoula where there are bound to be lots of new and old Camaros. I'll talk to them

I just had a Muffler Guy tell me that he has removed the center muffler on several Camaros and put in a straight pipe and it made a lot better sound without being too loud.

Any of y'all done that yet?

Leave the stock setup alone and get some TSP 1 7/8 Headers + High Flow Cats, lots of extra power + its quiet when cruising normal.

I just put a muffler delete on yesterday and really like it, you can hear the engine at idle, not crazy loud but perfect for everyday day driving and family usage. There's a little but of drone but as long as your below 2200rpm you hardly notice it, just enough to remind you of your exhaust. I recommend at least trying a muffler delete first

I 2nd the Borla S-type. It's like a muted rumble/purr. Sounds subtle until you get on it.

Real deep tone, very little rasp.

Thanks for all the info everybody

I'm doing the CAI as well (something I can do myself without a garage or lift).

I like the sound with my long-tubes and high flow cats with the stock exhaust. I do wish it was a bit louder, but I think muffler delete might be a bit too much. My plan is to get the stainless works retro chambered exhaust when $$$ allows. THAT system is bad @$$.

EDIT: Also, if you are stock I would recommend headers before exhaust (unless you are concerned with warranty). Headers and a tune will net you a LOT more power than ehxaust (which would be minimal, if any).

Whatever you do don't try to compare exhaust on YouTube.. you will go nuts because an I phone or android cannot accurately record what sound the exhaust is truly making..

Been there Went crazy doing that...

That's exactly the problem I'm having. I loved the sound of the Borla S-Type in one video and not in another. As a pro video guy, you'd think I'd know better
