Hell yes it could affect it. How much depends on how bad the oil is. Less lubrication means more friction. More friction means the engine is working harder thus using more gas.

Always change the oil at around 5k miles (non-synthetic), you might be able to pull off more if you don't drive hard, and you might need to change more often if you do drive hard. If your car is a bit older, you should check it at (3/4/5)000 miles to see if it's getting gritty & brown. If it is, then you should change it.

Immediatly, and depending on driving conditions: No. Oil doesn't affect gas mileage right as soon as the 3000 mi/km/engine light comes on.

It starts affecting gas mileage when it starts breaking down, getting really dirty/sludgy and then it affects gas mileage. But like i said, it's not likely to happen immediately as soon as the light comes on. (It could happen way before too, if you're driving hard in the winter cold/ summer heavy heat)

well its brand new, only 5,530 miles, and the oil change light has been on for 2 weeks now and she still wont change it. its 2 miles and 9 days short of what the oil change sticker says, and she refuses to believe that cars need to be broken in. i use her car more than she does, (im 18), and she thinks im driving all over the place when im not, i keep telling her its because she wont change the oil, and she yells at me for wasting her gas lol

im thinking about just taking it in and changing it myself lol

Wow, she lets you use her car and she pays for your gas too? Nice deal!
The car needs an oil change. It would be a real nice gesture for you to change the oil in her car and fill it up on your dime.

i suppose its nice, but id much rather be self sufficient rather than have to rely on someone else and their things in order for me to get by in life.

i keep telling her i wouldent yell (not literally) at her about it if i had my own car to worry about, but she always just has some dumb comeback for that one. im trying to get a job so i can get my own 01 camaro ive been looking at, but it seems like the economy isnt getting better in ohio quite yet, so i guess ill have to keep waiting

Funny you should ask- I just read this yesterday:

Extreme examples are extreme- but you get the gist.

If its new, its still tight and breaking in. If the oil is over a couple of days it won't effect gas milage. You can change your oil once a year max. Yes, it will take away from gas milage but not drastically. Ease off the pedal man.
Cheap gas also burns dirty and will effect milage. again, not drastically. Only a couple of bucks difference.
